I need to know what action to take because for the 2013 fall semester I had applied for financial aid and I got a Tentative financial aid award and I didn't notice this and no one explained it to me that what this was. So I signed up for my classes thinking that I had financial aid and took 13 credit courses. I passed all my classes and for the 2014 spring I went back to sign up for my courses and I'm told that my financial aid was cancelled since October and I was totally unaware of this. The school did not let me know at all so I wasn't able to withdraw from my classes that I could not afford. Supposedly my aid was cancelled because the number of household was changed and my widowed mother makes too much money and I was no longer eligible for the aid.
What should I do? If the school would have informed me that my aid was cancelled I would of never continued my classes because we can not afford it, I was really relying on the aid but now the school is saying I owe them money and I couldn't start school until it was paid. This is unfair and I need to know what to do, please help! I have spoken to the vice president and explained the situation but I feel that I should talk to someone else who can truly help me.

You need to go and talk to financial aid. Find put HOW they notified you. I would wager they DID notify you, but that you didn’t see, that notification either because you didn’t check your student portal, you had not updated your mailing or email address, or something like this. You would have had an outstanding bill for the fall term as well, and some kind of BILL should have been sent to you or to your oarents’s address as well.

Does your college have an ombudsman? If so, make an appointment.

I agree that the student was most likely informed multiple times, in multiple ways - but did not pay attention. I deal with this all the time. OP, look through your school email to see if you have reminders, notifications of a change in aid, notifications of bills, etc. I am willing to bet they are there. Very likely when you registered for classes, you checked a box that indicated that you understood that the school would use electronic notifications.

With that said, I will also say that I am sorry you are in this situation. I agree that you need to go to the financial aid office right away. Ask to speak with a manager - a manager can look carefully at your information to see if there is anything they can do to help you.

Thank you for the responses but no I check my email every day and I have gotten no mail, no notifications at all. My email and home address were up to date and I was even told that I am not the only student in this situation. I will go to the Financial Aid Office to see how they notified me because I got nothing. I’m going up to the school tomorrow to see who I can speak to again.
From the look of it will I end up having to pay this?

Find out why the number in your household was changed. Did you make a mistake on that question? Do you have a sibling in some sort of situation that may not count for some reason?

I am not entirely sure but I did make mistakes and needed to prove the income so I used the irs tool and maybe that’s why it was changed. I don’t have siblings.

Did you take out a student loan? If not, do so. How much do you owe?
