1) nope. the entire transcript from high school matters. but obviously we don't see ib scores in most cases.

2) you don't graduate from IB unless you have a certain number of IB points, right? final scores correlate pretty with IB grades, though, and doing IB in itself carries weight.

3) no such cutoff.

4) we ask the counselor to report class rank if they can.

5) don't know. it doesn't matter if you come from a top school. just do well wherever you are.

6) don't know what those things are, so usually not. SAT, SAT II, school grades, activities, essays, recommendations (not in order of importance) are the main things that Caltech looks at when deciding.

I just got an email from the Director of Admissions and he has better answers to these questions. I messed up because students don't evaluate international applications, so I was speaking with more certainty than I should have been. Please disregard my previous post.

1) do adcoms only look at predicted grades offered by the school in your first ib year AS THE ONLY ACADEMIC ASPECT ?

Not the only academic aspect, but the predicted grades carry tremendous weight in the academic evaluation.

2) If yes, then what is the use of the REAL ib score?

Some Universities would give you credit based on the scores on your real IB Exams. Caltech doesn’t give credit, but we would review your final test scores along with your final high school transcript before you enroll. If students suddenly have bad grades we might revoke an offer of admission. Likewise, if students have substantially lower IB scores than expected we might withdraw an offer of admission.

3) How many IB points do I need get into CALTEC?

There is no cut off, but most of our admitted students are scoring 40 or higher.

4) Do adcoms require ib students to state their ranking/postion at school?

We take whatever the school gives us.

5) What ib schools are top in uk and us?

There are no particular top schools.

6) Is GCSE/MYP/IGCSE/HKCEE of any importance?

Absolutely. For students who have done both the IB and one of the other international educational programs, we would look at the results for both.

IB Schools are completely overrated. I should know, since I go to one that's rated in the top 30 in the nation, yet it's complete garbage. Doesn't even offer HL Mathematics...I'm going to get screwed when I get to Caltech...

Some IB schools are completely overrated. Others are not. many IB schools are outstanding.

The IB curriculum itself is definitely NOT overrated, since the overall teaching style creates very analytical and creative students with a great deal of proficiency in a number of areas.

I know my school (IB school in Canada, generally regarded as the best) has been excellent, and I wouldn't take the AP (or anything else) over it in any scenario I can conceive of.

How does it create analytical and creative students?

I got a 11/20 on my internal assessments, because even though I'd figured out the right equation within 10 minutes, I got marked down for not having enough steps and trials down, and for not having my paper look pretty...

I also apparently don't get full credit during exams because I used the wrong terminology or something.
