HELP!!! I am really confused and appreciate any help! My daughter is considering the following schools as an illustration or fashion design or fashion illustration major and has been accepted at all of them. Syracuse (no $), Drexel (maybe $5,000/yr), SVA (no $), SCAD ($9,500/yr), SAIC ($7,800/yr), University of Delaware ($15,000/yr), Parsons (don't know if there will be a scholarship yet). She hated University of Delaware and liked the SCAD campus although I don't know if Savannah is the ideal place for an art school/career. We have not seen any of the other schools. Parsons will be out of the question if there is no financial or merit aid. She would prefer an urban setting. I also wonder about the social life at these schools.

These are great choices and congratulations! We have visited Drexel and it is in the city (and across the street from UPenn), it does have an urban campus feel – a large number of buildings – very concrete campus. Philly is a great place. But it’s not a particularly attractive campus. SVA has less of a campus feel. Buildings are spread out from the east to west side of NYC, from about 21st to 23rd streets. You pretty much are in one or two buildings, depending upon your major. Very strong in illustration, don’t know it for fashion design. Very strong faculty connections and you are in NYC. I know a computer animation major at SCAD who is very happy there – from what I understand, it is very spread out and Savannah is not New York Parsons is fantastic for fashion – located in the Village, completely urban life. Great reputation in that area. Also, you have an opportunity to take classes in the other colleges within the New School (of which Parsons is a part). SAIC is in the heart of the cultural area in Chicago. Very urban with a handful of buildings. Most of the studio classes are in a building attached to the Art Institute – cannot beat that. Syracuse is just not urban (if you are comparing to NYC. Hope this helps! Good luck.

Thank you so much for the information! We think we are going to eliminate Syracuse (no aid and sub-urban campus) and Drexel because other than fashion design, which she is not sure eshe wants to major in, there are no other majors that interest her. That would leave SVA, Parsons (only if we receive aid), SCAD and SAIC. Which do you think would be the better choice? Being urban schools are these schools safe?

Have you asked this question in the Visual Arts Sub-Forum? It is inside the College Majors Forum. Even if they don’t know your daughter’s specific major, many of the people there are familiar with the different schools.
Thank you! What do you know about the social life in SVA, Parsons, SAIC and SCAD? Also is the student body very extremely artsy?
