Help! Important Admissions Sat Sending Q

Johns wants SAT scores sent in by Dec 15.

Does this mean if i send it today, the 8th of Dec, that i should rush score reports? It says on collegeboard that it could take 1-2 weeks to send if i don't rush score reports (which makes it more expensive) or soemthing... will that jeopardize my admissions?

PLEASE ANSWER ASAP

btw im a regular admission applicant (and i find it weird that the sat score report is due BEFORE the application is even due -- which is jan 1st deadline thru commonapp)

"A Note on Standardized Test Dates
Johns Hopkins strongly recommends that Early Decision (ED) candidates complete their required standardized tests no later than October of their senior year. Regular Decision (RD) candidates should complete the required tests no later than December of their senior year.

Although we cannot guarantee that November (ED) or January (RD) scores will arrive before the Admissions Committee evaluation, past experience suggests that scores taken on these dates usually arrive in time.

November (ED) or January (RD) scores will be accepted for those students unable to meet their test requirements by October (ED) or December (RD). In such cases, we encourage you to note your intention of taking the later standardized test(s) on your application. There is no need to rush your scores."

Hopkins Undergraduate Admissions :: Apply :: Standardized Test Requirements

forget about the collegeboard website, it's out of date in tons of areas. based on this info from the jhu website, your scores will be fine, and you don't need to rush them.

Johns Hopkins does not require test scores by December 15th ... THE COLLEGE BOARD WEB SITE IS WRONG!!! (We have contacted them numerous times to change this, not sure why they don't).

The official answer...

"Applicants to Johns Hopkins University must request that all their SAT Reasoning, SAT Subject exams, and ACT scores be sent directly by the testing agency. The Johns Hopkins code for the College Board is 5332 and for the ACT is 1704.

Test scores need to be requested from the testing agencies prior to our stated application deadlines but may arrive after the deadline. Regular Decision applicants must submit their request for their tests to be sent to Johns Hopkins prior to the January 1st deadline. Though the scores will arrive past the deadline they will still be considered if requested in advance of the deadline. There is no need to rush score reports as they do not arrive any earlier. "

What do you mean "request for tests to be sent before January 1st"?

Can't I only request the scores sent after I take the test?

I'm a Junior applying to JHU this year, and although I have already completed the required SATs and SAT Subject Tests, I am currently taking advanced science classes this semester. In light of this, I feel that if I retook the subject tests in January, I'd get a score reflecting my most up-to-date knowledge in those subjects.

Why wouldn't they get there earlier if I did a rush report?

Well, when you register to take an SAT Reasoning/Subject test, you can request score reports sent to four colleges for free. Make sure to list JHU as one of them!

If I'm not mistaken, rush reporting would only help if you requested the tests to be sent after you took the test and not during registration. The scores (if requested to be sent to the four+ colleges during registration) are sent ASAP to the colleges whenever they are available (the College Board is aware of January application deadlines), and obviously, rush reporting the scores would have them sent to the colleges ASAP as well. Save your money and request a score report to be sent during the registration process on the CollegeBoard website.

al6200, why are you applying to JHU (or any college, for that matter) in your junior year?

Senior Year, I made a typo.

OK, well . . . I am a parent, not a Hopkins admissions staff member, but my read of the sentence "Regular Decision applicants must submit their request for their tests to be sent to Johns Hopkins prior to the January 1st deadline" means what it says, and precludes consideration of SAT tests taken in January.

Another page of the Hopkins Admissions website, Hopkins Undergraduate Admissions :: Apply :: Deadlines and Requirements, is even more on point:

"Regular Decision Freshman
December Latest date to take standardized tests"

I think you should not worry about this, and just submit the SAT scores for the tests that you have already taken. The admissions people will see from your transcript what courses you had taken as of the time you took the SAT Subject Tests, and will view the test results in that light.

"Although we cannot guarantee that November (ED) or January (RD) scores will arrive before the Admissions Committee evaluation, past experience suggests that scores taken on these dates usually arrive in time.

November (ED) or January (RD) scores will be accepted for those students unable to meet their test requirements by October (ED) or December (RD). In such cases, we encourage you to note your intention of taking the later standardized test(s) on your application. There is no need to rush your scores."

Idk, that seems to imply to me that they are fine with January scores - although I am a tad bit borderline about retaking the tests.

I got 800 Math Level 2, 740 Physics, and 710 Chemistry, so I'd retake for the Physics and Chemistry.

"November (ED) or January (RD) scores will be accepted for those students unable to meet their test requirements by October (ED) or December (RD)." But, you HAVE met the test requirements. (Actually, subject tests are not even required.) Also, those scores -- 710 and 740 -- are pretty respectable.

Still, I guess you could take the tests and see what happens.

Hmmm... Yeah. If any adcoms would like to perhaps clarify that sentince some more, it would be nice. Can January scores be considered because one thinks they can do better.

I mean, I took Physics without any electricity, which is a good portion of the test.

Let's try to clear this up...

Applicants to Hopkins for Regular Decision for the Fall 2008 term must request from the testing agencies that their standardized test scores (SAT, SAT subject exams, ACT, TOEFL) be sent directlty to Hopkins. This request must be made prior to the January 1st deadline. So prior to January 1st you need to contact the College Board/ETS or ACT and have your scores forwarded to Hopkins (College Board code is 5332 - ACT is 1704).

January scores can be sent in but as I have said many times before there is no guarantee that January exams will arrive in time to be reviewed by the Admissions committee. DO NOT WAIT TO SEND YOUR SCORES UNTIL AFTER THE JANUARY EXAM. If you are taking January exams, you need to request your current scores be sent, and then you will need to request your January scores to be sent.

As far as rushing scores, it is a true waste of money. Rush scores may arrive a day or two earlier to our office but they will not be processed quicker by our office.

Allright, so just ask for January scores to be sent, while filling out the registration (with the 4 free choices), but there is no guarantee.

Thanks. That cleared it up.
