• In 8th grade I was good at NOTHING so I decided I was going to learn how to sing. I worked very hard on my own through high school learning and improving a lot. I used YouTube and posted videos on a website to get feedback and just kept trying and trying and trying and I still am. I'm very socially awkward and I feel very uncomfortable singing when people are around so I kept it a secret from my family and most of my friends. It was difficult to practice when I had to wait until I was home alone and be a spaz whenever someone came home in the middle of me doing a cover. I feel like there's a really obnoxious singer inside of me that can't wait to go to college far away and be set free.

•I'm really shy and I hate speaking in front of class so I took a theater class because isn't the point the point of a comfort zone to go out of it. It wasn't really that much of a bold move tho because I've been in theater before and I'm totally comfortable on stage but the mini assignments in front of the classroom were very nerve wracking. I could compare this to a variant of tag with bases and how staying on the base the whole time is boring and ruins the point of the game. The base representing the comfort zone.
•I really really love math which doesn't show on my application as much as I would like because my math sat is much lower than CR, I'm taking the lowest level of calc (honors). I don't really know what I could write about math though. I watch vihart and numberphile a lot of do some complicated math for fun. I guess I could write about a really hard problem I worked on?
•I started questioning religion and the logic behind a lot of it. I looked into a lot of different religions and deciding on Deism. I believe that god gave me a conscience so that I could decide what's right and wrong myself without a bible or priest or anything.

Which of these sounds like the best common app essay topic. I'm kind of planning on deciding which one and then deciding which question it could work for.

Tbh, I think it depends on what you want to go into. If you’re into STEM more than anything, I would use the common app as an opportunity to express that interest (especially if it doesn’t show on your resume/transcript/the rest of your app as much). However, if you want to go into theater or music, you might want to do your second option. Also, that option works well enough for most any field of interest because regardless of where you are, you have to speak in front of people. ^.^

I think people aren’t replying because its a hard question and there’s no obvious one right answer. Take a stab at all of them and see where they lead you. Write something genuine and distinctive that doesn’t make you sound like an unpleasant person to be around.

IMO, if most of your classes/activities are centred around STEM, write about something else for your essay. They want well-rounded kids. The religion one is kind of a common topic and it can easily make someone biased against you if they have deeply held religious beliefs, so I’d avoid that one. I like the theatre one best, personally.

Rereading your post, I really don’t think you should write about the math one. Even just the way you write about the potential topic makes you seem more like you’re obligated to write about it, rather than being genuinely excited about the idea. Write something that comes naturally to you, and speak from your heart, as cliché as that sounds.

My classes are not very stem heavy because I decided I wanted to major I’m biomedical engineering after I scheduled my senior year. I’m taking ap bio and honors calc and physics (both available in ap). The only club I’m in that’s stem related is brain bee where we learn about the brain and participate in a competition. And math league which everyone’s in bc it’s extra credit in math class. I really think my strong point is my love for and talent in math and you can’t really tell from the rest of my application.
