help me choose an engineering major.

for me I'm looking to major in chemical engineering or biomedical engineering but whenever I tell someone i want to go into those majors they say choose something else because the salary in chemical or biomedical engineering is not good and its hard to find jobs, but I tell them I can easily find jobs in chemical engineering in the middle east because there is a lot of jobs for oil refining companies, but they dont believe me and tell me to choose electrical or mechanical engineering because I will easily find jobs with good salary with these majors.
So, are they speaking the truth or not?because I am very interested in chemeng or biomeng but the more I think about what they said, I get depressed and want to choose another major,so can anybody reinforce my ideas about how chemical or biomedical engineering is going to have more job prospects?

You have the same problem that a lot of people deal with believe it or not. Yes, what they say is true the job market is poor and they pay is not the highest for chemical or biomedical engineer. The reason people say to choose mechanical engineering is because it covers a little bit of every field and basically you get a well rounded engineering degree compared to a specific engineering degree. What that will do is set you up to go to graduate school for a more specified area of study after you get your mechanical engineering degree. So you would go to regular college for 4 years and then you could go to graduate school for biomed or chem engineering. Also the nice thing about doing this is you may end up changing your mind about what you want to go into and mechanical engineering would give you more than enough options. I would suggest you look into mechanical engineering and compare the curriculum classes with bio and chem engineering. Basically, what you would be doing is getting insurance on your degree. You leave all the windows of possibility open along with the windows you want specifically. If you choose to go immediately to chemical or bio then your pretty much stuck with those fields of study and there’s not much you can do to go back except spend a lot of time and heartache doing it.
Also talk to some school counselors at your school and prospective schools because they are they experts on problems like this.

That’s absurd the number of employment spots for biomedical is expected to rise 39% by ~2020. One of the fastest growing fields in the nation. But the salary is relatively low. Chemical growth will be much slower but salary is higher than all other fields but petroleum. But did you know the chemical industry in the us is our primary and most valuable exporting industry? You won’t have trouble finding a job if you put your mind to it.

My mechE son is gainfully employed not in the petroleum/oil&gas industry with a nice salary, and my Chem E senior has 4 job interviews this week, also not in those fields (I believe). It isn’t as bleak as some say. Major in what you want. All that said, my Mech E says if he had it to do over, hed have chosen electrical E. Lots of demand.

Electrical engineering ftw!

Biomed is one of the fastest growing but is also one of the smallest. So huge growth rate does not necessarily mean huge amount of jobs available. If you have a lot of people trying to get in the biomed industry it can be tough to initially get going.

It’s true that bio and chemical engineering don’t have as many job openings as other eng majors like EE / ME / CE but chemical engineers make the most money (on average) with a BS degree.

thank you all for your help,I really appreciate it
@PrepRmblr we dont have school counselors here
@jym626 can you tell me more about your chemE son how was his gpa and it looks like chemical engineering jobs arent really hard to find, how is his salary good or ok?

Try putting “career survey” in the search boxes for Berkeley, Cal Poly, and Virginia Tech web sites. They have fairly detailed career survey results.

He is just in the interview process so don’t know about salary. There is more than just GPA- he’s had 2 good internships and is an officer in his school’s chapter of AIChE. His GPA is good, but not stellar.

If your current school doesn’t have some sort of counselor then contact the schools you are interested in and there’s a 100% guarantee they have an admissions director that will help you out
