I'm at Stevenson.

I'm at Porter.

Cowell- Original College, sick landscaping, more singles than the other colleges, smaller rooms, older dorms. Known for pretty heavy drinking and athletic types (it's right next to the gym). Best dining hall on campus, but it's closed right now. Very centrally located, it's the same bus stop as quarry plaza.

Stevenson - I hear there are a lot of Jewish kids there, but I dunno. Sister college of Cowell. Smaller dorms to give that "family feeling".

College Eight - I stayed there for summer session. Too many STAIRS. But, an occasional view of the ocean, has it's own dining halll, and far from everything else. It is nicer on the outside than on the inside. There are loads of deer. Really pretty close to the west remote parking lot, if you wanna save on a parking pass (but not for freshman).

Oakes - Where they hide the people of color. Started by the Black Panthers, they've got major pride but nasty looking brown buildings (I'm not sure if the architect intended that particular pun). Even further away from everything than College Eight. Closer to West Remote parking than it is to "close in" parking.

Porter - Stoners, artist types. They started the naked run, they host 4/20, and campus tours no longer go through there because they have such crazy folk. Bonus? Nice coy pond. I've heard you can get every hard drug you can imagine there.

Kresge - Stoners, less into hard drugs. I have a good friend from Kresge and he said people smoke weed on their balconies. All apartments, and not the most clean ones. And apartments can mean living with up to 9 people.

Crown - Nerds. Any type of nerds, cute bio major nerds to "I live for WoW" nerds. They don't come out much.

Merril - Known as "sterile merril" though no one knows why. They party plenty, but no one wants to walk up cardiac hill drunk, so they party at merril. Cardiac hill, however, will keep off the freshman 15.

Nine/Ten - Basically the same college, loads of super smart asians, new dorms, and a skyscraper feeling. A good dining hall and decently close to the center of campus, but they're hard to get into.

Another on-campus living option (in case you hate the college you're affiliated with) is "The Village", which is at the ass end of campus but is a guaranteed single with a shared fridge and living area (four people to a building). It's cheaper than the dorms, but it has a rat problem and has an "old horror movie set" feeling to it. And the stairs to the bus stop could cause a heart attack. But hey, if you like that sort of thing.

i would like to attend ucsc in fall 2009. i plan to study communications. i am jewish but i dont neccesarily want to live in stevenson because i dont exactly fit the jew stereotype. are there any dorms that have kitchens? i would like to make my own food and not have to share a bathroom with more than four people. is this possible? i am not preppy but not a hippie. i am more of the urban outfitters type. i like to party although i am not a heavy drinker and i smoke only occasionally. i would also like to live close to my classes and fun social activities, does anyone have any suggestions for me?

^ Well if you want a kitchen, Kresge...because it is ALL apartments, so you will most definitely end up with a kitchen if you get into this one. You will have to share the bathroom with a little more than 4 people, however, but it won't be like sharing it with 30.

Oakes has apartments too.

Basically, I'm a hippie at heart :] However, I love diversity and I want to be in a place that's exciting and fun as opposed to SUPER laid back all the time. I totally wouldn't mind being with tree-huggers or anything like that, but a balance would be nice. I don't think I'd want to go to the super techy places but I DO want a place where people are serious about their studies and don't just waste time. Basically: work hard, play hard type. Any college suggestions?

OH and i want to be in dorms not apartments!

What else is Kresge like? That's where i put my first choice so i think thats where i'm gong.

You already got your packet??

I got mine too (yesterday in fact), so you should be receiving yours soon.

yeah i did! but i live in marin so only like an hour and a half away

Oh okay, haha. I'm about 6-8 hours away...so I guess I need to be more patient. I'm just worried because the address on file is not longer where I reside (dad's house) and my stepmom is crazy jealous that I'm going to college and her daughter that's my age isn't....and she is the type that would just throw it away. I guess I'm just being paranoid though!

You're not missing anything terrrrribly important in the packet. Most of the info can be found online.

Okay good. so can I technically do everything online?

I haven't submitted my SIR yet...since I'm still waiting on UC Berkeley (not really counting on getting in) ..plus I'm still not 100% sure....

My dad really wants me to go to UCSD...so I'm humoring him by saying I'll think about it...and honestly, I am considering it, but the only thing it has going for it is the academics....

I'll give you a quick overview of the packet
-Paper about spring spotlight - admissions.ucsc.edu/springspotlight09
-Packet about the colleges. Just the online content but in a neater format
-FAFSA/scholarship info
-Congrats on your offer of admission blah blah go accept it online by May 1st

Oh, it has the scholarship info? ...that's not online, is it? Or has it been updated?

and thankks, by the way =]

It's not very specific. I think all of it can be found online. It would be silly of them if it couldn't be. XD

I think the scholarship info is the only part of that packet that isn't online

What College would be best for us Political Science/political junkies?
