This is how it goes:

Do you want to be high all day long and party on Tuesday and Wednesday nights until 4:00am? Choose Kresge or Porter.

Do you want a moderate amount of partying mixed in with a moderate amount of studying?
Choose 9, 10, 8, Stevenson, or Cowell.

Do you want to never see alcohol or drugs during your four years of college?
Choose Crown or Merrill.

Do you want to celebrate diversity and live in, arguably, the worse dorms and apartments on campus?
Choose Oaks.

…Okay, these atmospheres may be a little exaggerated, but you get the idea. Most people don’t even know that the stereotypes of the colleges before choosing them. You’ll be fine anywhere.

That Crown/Merrill stereotype is completely wrong, by the way.

I admit the stereotype is an exaggeration, but Merrill and Crown are certainly two of the more ‘dryer’ colleges at UCSC. Most of my friends are affiliated with these colleges and they tell me that alcohol and weed are scarce.

Dryer, yes. Bone dry? Definitely not. I’m living at Crown right now. If you want to smoke/drink, you just have to know which building and floor to go to.

@ohmygoddenise: There’s no real concentration at any of the colleges of people in your major. Avoid Kresge/Porter/Crown/Merrill, maybe Oakes too.

@XShyGuyX: You sound like a Cowell/Stevenson type of guy.

@RLSell1992: Crown or Merrill. Wait, don’t stop reading. You’d especially like the academic house in Crown (Galileo), where there are a lot of Bio majors and no alcohol or drugs in sight. Galileo houses all of the people in the ACE program- which gives students extra help in math and chemistry. There are all kinds of people in Galileo because of the ACE program, it’s probably one of the more diverse houses in Crown.

@Liesel Thanks, after seeing all the colleges I think I was leaning more towards Cowell. Thanks for confirming that. :)

-I’m a poli sci major.
-I have the hippie mentality but don’t do drugs
-I want to be surrounded by people who are laid back/chill but also have a night life/party occasionally
-I want to be near a gym

@christinasc91

I’d choose eithe Cowell, Stevenson or C9

C9 is very close to the Social Science department. People in C9 party occasionally, but don’t care if you choose to study all day.

Cowell and Stevenson are right next to the gym, but C9 isn’t far away from the gym as you think it is. My friend gave us a tour from C9 to the gym and we were there in 5 minutes

@tonythetiger

Thanks for your response. From what some people have been saying, it feels like cowell/stevenson/c9 are more fit for preps/jocks… and I’d like to be in more of a artistic/experimental environment… what do you think of kresge or porter for me?

I actually have a question about Porter. I filled out my SIR to attend UCSC in the Fall and I put my college preferences in order- with Porter at #1, but I also noticed that there was a notice saying that no new undergrads can go to Porter? Does anyone have ANY info. about this??! It would be greatly appreciated!

hey guys,

I’m being really indecisive on which college to choose. I’ve basically narrowed it down to Cowell and College 9.

Basically, I’m Filipino.
My major is biochemistry, my pathway is pre-med.
I’m not a nerd, but I am one of those hardworking people striving to achieve the best grades. I am really serious when studying etc.
I want to be all out there, have fun, meet new people, gain a lot of friends.
I’m thinking of wanting to be in some student organization, cultural clubs.
I love languages. I hope to learn one or few when I’m @ UCSC and study abroad.
I love diversity, but I do want to see asians around.
I don’t drink or do drugs. No smoking either. I really don’t like these things.
I want to be able to be fit.

I visited the colleges and was set on Crown until I felt the atmosphere. I didn’t really like it that much. It was really low-key for me.
For Cowell, I fell in love. It was so pretty and felt really homey. The oldness adds a sense of familiarity. I loved how everything was close together, dining, library, and I think I saw a field. The dorms didn’t feel spacey though. It felt cramped.
I also loved College 9. I liked the feel of it being modern and new. The high buildings, nice dining etc. I didn’t get to see the dorms here, but I heard there’s more space.

I don’t know what I should choose. Can you guys help me out?

@bananananslug: That’s really strange…I haven’t heard anything about that. I’ll ask around.

@dunkmoonX: Neither Cowell or C9 would be particularly better for you. Drugs/alcohol aren’t hard to avoid. Have you heard of the ACE program at Crown? It’s Crown-only, and gives first year students extra help with chem and math. If you’re really into academics check it out.

I don’t know about Crown. I don’t want to be so engrossed in studying, but the extra help does sound nice. I really didn’t like the environment there.

@dunkmoonx, I think Crown/C9/Cowell would work great for you. Crown can have that vibe that there’s nothing really going on there, but it’s kind of different once you actually live at the dorms there. I had a friend who was a huge party-er in hs and he ended up at Crown. People thought he would have a horrible time at a “nerdy place such as Crown.” Except I know for a fact that he had the time of his life there.

If you REALLY didn’t like Crown, then I think C9 might be the second best choice.

So many people on here are so wary of the “drug/party” scene! I’ve stayed with my friend in Porter numerous times, and I’ll tell you, I never saw any “raging parties”. You also don’t smell weed all the time either.

I loved Porter because it was the most social. Kids are always in the quad or just walking around visiting friends. I wouldn’t be so concerned about “hippies” or “artsy types”.

It’s amusing to me to hear everyone’s top college pick. A lot of people on here are mentioning College 9 & 10 and quite frankly, I’m bored. They don’t seem to have any character to me.

I laughed about the “Stevenson” stereotype because I did hear it was the college for “Jewish stoners”. The few people I know that are in Stevenson happen to be Jewish and smoke weed.

I also heard the current students call Merrill “Sterile Merrill”–because it’s on a hill and separate from the rest of the colleges. That was a huge turn off for me.

Quite frankly, my number one picks are Porter and Kresge. I would be deeply disappointed if I had to go anywhere else.

There really aren’t any parties in the dorms. You can see some parties go down at Kresge and Porter apartments though. Mostly when you hear about parties in general, they are usually always off campus.

I think you might have a slight bias towards Porter/Kresge, haha. Then again, we all have our preferences for colleges. Basically all colleges are very social, it just depends who you meet.

Merrill is usually called that because nothing really happens at Merrill, not really due to location (otherwise Crown/Oakes would be in the same chapter). However, my girlfriend lived at Merrill last year and I was so shocked when I heard about the stuff they did last year. I had a blast last year with all of her floormates, people didn’t believe my facebook pictures were taken in Merill dorms. Some people even say it’s the hidden smoker college (gf didn’t smoke though).

MidnightGolfer, I definitely have a bias towards Porter/Kresge, I am not ashamed to admit!

I’m just surprised that most of the people on this thread aren’t very interested in either.

People just have different interests. Like you stated how you thought C9/10 didn’t really have character. Some people fall in love with C9/10’s atmosphere/location, student population, and the dorms.

I think that’s where the binary is apparent. Most people I knew last year at C9/10 were completely turned off by Kresge/Porter. They just blindly labeled it as a huge grouping of hippies, stoners, and artsy kids. Of course this isn’t true, but it’s basically the same type of judgement you made for C9/10 :P. To each his own I guess

You’re right, I should have been more aware. If I’m correct, you’re in C 9? I’m sure it’s a great fit for you, just not my style.
