I'm having a really hard time here. I've already been accepted to Michigan State and am anticipating acceptance from University of Michigan. I'm planning to study Political Science or Public Policy. U of M has a very highly ranked PoliSci program, but I'm also interested in MSU's James Madison College, a residential college for Public Policy/ Affairs.

Is anyone familiar with one or both program(s), and what's your opinion? What are the big differences?

MSU’s James Madison Program is top-notched and caters towards undergrad students in a small residential college setting!! Alumni include but not limited to a whole bunch of legislators in the Capital of Lansing and across the state, as well as the President of University of Virginia - Teresa A. Sullivan. On the other hand, UofM certainly has more name recognition outside of the state of Michigan, and Ann Arbor is a more lively town/city compared to E. Lansing. Therefore, if you don’t mind paying the extra, Michigan’s Poli Sci is currently ranked ahead of MSU in terms of graduate ranking. There is certainly the ‘fit factor’ involved between the two for many of the Michiganders who chose one over the other. I would suggest the OP to visit both campuses before making the final decision. Best of Luck to you! :)

They post the decision on your MSU account. It says that they’ll be sending an acceptance packet or something, but I’m not sure if you get a letter if you’re denied.

Go Blue! Are you aware of the Residential College in East Quad at Michigan? If you’re looking for a small college feel within a big university, check out the RC. You can take classes outside the RC, but life in East Quad is amazing (or was when I was there many years ago). In any case, no question, U-Mich.
