I was accepted to Stony brook, rutgers new brunswick and rutgers newark. I choose biology as my major and want to become a doctor. I am a NJ resident but is stony brook really worth the extra money? I mean at RU newark, I could have a higher gpa than NB plus newark is like 10 minutes away from my house. I like stony brook because of its research opportunities plus it has a medical school and when i called up the office, they said it has an 86% acceptance rate to med schools.
Bottom line: which school is it better to attend to be a doctor. Where could I have better research opportunities, maintain a high gpa (easily) and where would they better prepare me for the MCAT.

Students who attend or attended stony brook: convince me why i should opt for your school over rutgers. And is it worth the few extra $$$

thanks in advance!

That 86% rate seems a bit extreme. That might be the rate for those students with GPA of 3.8+, 30+ on the MCAT and numerous extracurriculars only, not everyone who applies.

Honestly, regardless of my drive to encourage you to attend Stony Brook, I think you should opt for Rutgers. If you’re keen on attending medical school, save some money by going to your home state institution. Rutgers is also an excellent University.

yeah i figured on the acceptance rate
I live in pakistan and havent had the chance to visit any of the schools so i guess i’ll decide once i reach there. DJStony thanks for the advice! Looks like i’ll most likely stick to rutgers but can you give me some info on the student life at SBU. I mean how are the classes, are the teachers “motivated”, how’s the food (is there halal food there-i’m Muslim), are any apartments available nearby, car parking scene and would it be harder to maintain a good gpa here or rutgers. Again thanks!

I can’t really comment on Rutgers.

There is halal cuisine available at Stony Brook, in addition to every other diet restriction you can think of. Student life is good. There’s a huge international cohort at the University and your level of participation in activities and student life will determine how much “fun” you have.

The only apartments on-campus are reserved for those of U3 or U4 standing and beyond (graduate level). I’m not too familiar with off-campus housing options, but the University has an office which can assist you with this.

The faculty will show interest in you if you show promise and motivation back to them. This is true in any University.

There is parking available; however, depending upon where you live you may have to park farther occasionally because it fills up fast.

sorry for the late response. I was gone to my village-we don’t have internet there.
@DJStony: Thank you so much for the detailed response. I really appreciate it :)
