Help me decorate this corner on my counter in my dining area

@Hoggirl - have you definitely decided on some kind of faux flower to set on the counter? Or are you still open to other concepts, like hanging mobiles? Those would leave the counter free if you ever need the room.

This made me laugh because my favorite of all of those linked by @Marilyn was the one encased in glass! :joy:

No, I do not, but that was a good idea!

I really cannot hang anything from the ceiling there. The building’s sprinkler system has a line there. There is a sprinkler head right over that counter. I’m not going to attempt that.

I do think I like the idea of flowers or a plant best.

Do you have a Trader Joe’s? I buy live orchids and they can last months before the flowers fall. I have some luck with getting them to rebloom but a lot of people just buy a new one. Or maybe find a glass vase you love and buy fresh flowers each week.

Fake orchid (pop of color) on the left and a low oblong bowl in the center. Your table should have something in the center too.

Such great ideas here.

Hoggirl - if you like a clean slate on your counter, perhaps you could put something on the wall next to the counter? That way there’d be some visual interest, but you’d keep your work area clear?

I did something like this on an open, small wall area on the house we are flipping…

PS I get you on the live plants - they are stressors as I don’t want to kill them but it happens quite frequently.

If you aren’t into plants/flowers for the space, you could decorate with two or three glass hurricanes and colorful pillar candles. Example here:

Plants or no plants is absolutely a personal decision. But plants don’t have to be hard. If you don’t feel you have a lot of plant knowledge, you should not buy a plant based on looks - having the wrong plant for your space (light, temperature, etc) is often what “kills” plants. Instead go to a local plant store that will take the time to listen and help you choose a plant that could work for your space.

@Hoggirl do you love how we are all so invested in your dilemma?! I forget if you mentioned this along the way, what made you decide that you needed something - and maybe needed something in that particular corner (as opposed to something in the middle for instance)??

Ds was here over the holidays and said (again - he said it last year when he was here for the holidays) that our home was, “sterile.” Last year he had said that it looked like no one lived in it. That’s honestly how I kind of like it. I follow Joshua Becker (Becoming Minimalist), and he talks about how calming and restful hotel rooms are because they don’t have stuff in them. So, when the poster said our space was hotel-like, it honestly didn’t bother me.

But, I had been at a friend’s keeping her grandson and she had some Christmas decor out, and it did make her place seem more homey and inviting (I had Christmas stuff out, too). And, when my Christmas stuff came down, it did seem awfully stark in here.

That long counter seemed the most egregiously sterile (since there is nothing on it), and honestly, that empty corner has always bugged me some. I thought the right corner was the best place - seemed most out of the way, too. JMO!

I do not do any food prep at all. It’s great for serving. Not that we have had anyone over to serve much - lol.

I am thankful everyone has ideas and is invested. Though, it’s putting the pressure on me to find the “perfect” thing. :joy:

If you like uncluttered, then I think you should wait rather than feel pressure to find something to fill a “void” that corresponds to others’ impressions rather than your own feeling. I wish I was organized enough to have empty counters in my house, but I’m not; however, when I clean/organize it’s always my goal to get a counter completely empty because like you, I find that soothing. One other idea is to embrace the concept of serving food on that counter by “serving food” to yourself - a fruit bowl that gets put away when there isn’t fruit in it. It’s not decorative art for its own sake. Instead it’s utilitarian/functional and also changeable.

Just playing with a couple of ideas. Didn’t take the time to erase the borders of these pics…

Perhaps since you have on the far left of the counter a clear glass feature, you may want to carry that theme on on the right - maybe it will give your mind better balance. This one features an orchid in a glass type holder. And I added an oblong wood fruit bowl in the middle

Here’s one with a snake plant - very little maintenance.

When I look at the whole view photos, this is what comes to my mind:

The center of the top glass shelf needs something tall, or something with color needs to be centered on the wall over the shelves.
I don’t want anything on the right side of the counter - it will make that side too heavy with the counterbalance of lightness of the glass shelving.
I want to place 2 low to medium objects on the counter in front of/to cover the outlets - maybe a low cactus terrarium and a low fruit bowl, or one long fruit bowl between them to draw my eyes away from the outlets.

ETA- get 2 long oblong bowls - one for the counter and one on the table. They can be left empty, filled with shells, fruit, nuts in shells…

Oh, I kind of like these thoughts, too. I would prefer something sitting on the glass shelf than hanging on the wall. What sort of something would you suggest? Something like a vase? Or a sculpture? Or a large platter? In what medium.

The outlets are 38” apart. The entire counter is ten feet long. I think it would need to be to items to cover the outlets. I have to say that they never bothered me until people pointed them out on this thread. Now they are driving me crazy. I am such a symmetry person. I feel like I need a “pair of somethings.” Idk.

@UnsentDementor - don’t worry - I am not going to get into a rush to find something. Good advice.

@Hoggirl, I think something in a colored glass.

Google searched colored glass sculpture, there are so many, but this could add the height:
https://www.google.com/aclksa=l&ai=DChcSEwiw4Jzn1qf1AhUqam8EHQQ3AkwYABBhGgJqZg&sig=AOD64_2vhMiiFBAj8QTk8_AjZY3Ned68Uw&adurl&ctype=5&ved=2ahUKEwjphY3n1qf1AhVDMM0KHaE0AtkQuxd6BQgBEIUF

Then maybe colored glass bowls for the counter:

Sadly, neither of those links worked :frowning:

I have done some googling myself but would love to see your specific ideas.

ETA: And would you intermix the stemware in with the glass sculpture?

There is a lovely shop near me in St. Pete Beach. The vendors change items all of the time. Prices are very reasonable. Check their FB page: Coastal Cottage.
