Help me! Duke VS Princeton

<p>Lucky I got in both :) and unluckily I have to choose :(</p>

<p>I'll probably do finance which means pton is probably better due to its slightly better network.
But I'm...hmm...kinda scared of pton. i heard you dont have a life there and its supper depressing. but then again, i dont think the work load at Duke would be a lot better.</p>

<p>I do care about the quality of life, a lot, as well as the school's overall reputation. </p>

<p>I'm super torn between them...ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
and since i'm international, i dont get a chance to visit schools.
Can someone tell me more about how life is at pton/duke, in terms of social scene, academics, etc??</p>

<p>Really, please help me. I'm damn confused.</p>

<p>is far better than Duke in all departments, reputation, etc. Why spend $50K on the “not best”. I wouldn’t.</p>

<p>if you care a lot about quality of life, i would go with duke. best bball in the nation, sick parties/nightlife (karen owen with those dope athletes, anyone?)…</p>

<p>but from an academic and reputation standpoint pton wins (duke still has excellent academics and reputation though)</p>

<p>

No school is far better than Duke. We are comparing 2 top 10 universities here. Princeton is slightly more prestigious but Duke has better weather, better social life and a stronger athletics program, which could all be big considerations for the OP. Also, its easy to get better grades at Duke because of Princeton’s grade deflation policy. Both are really strong targets for finance and consulting.</p>

<p>I see</p>

<p>a present-future tradeoff :P</p>

<p>I think I’ll to Pton…it’s close to NYC and Im not that into athletics
thx :D</p>

<p>Which country are you coming from and what is your major?</p>

<p>

That would be true in 2010…</p>

<p>Butler/Uconn in 2011. We’ll find out tomorrow night.</p>

<p>I think Butler’s got this</p>

<p>Hi sxz203, I currently live In NC and have personally visited Duke but have yet to visit Princeton.
Academics: Both are actually just about near the same quality. As a matter of fact, Duke and Princeton are tied at the #5 spot in the U.S. for best universities. Duke’s acceptance rate is around 13-15%, while Princeton a mere 7%. Princeton has an academically better reputation because it is recognized as an ivey and pre medical powerhouse. Duke constantly falls below, or just below the Ivey Leagues but is still amazing in things like Economics, Social Science, and of course, Biological Sciences/Biochemistry. Princeton has a bit more prestige but still strong in economics and pre medical programs (Preparing students for medical school)
Social Scene: Duke is a church surrounded university, partially because North Carolina itself is very Christian Church Oriented. I would say that Duke is more liberal politically than Princeton. The number of people at the different universities is not really all that different. Both are private schools and therefore have the lower end of the stick when it comes to population with Princeton being about 5,000 undergraduate students and Duke 6,000. Duke Is in Durham, North Carolina, which is pretty suburban but drive about an hour up and your at the most urbanized place of NC, Raleigh. Drive down and you will be in Warren County and Henderson, very rural, very country. Princeton is in more of a suburbanized area.
All in all, both are amazing schools, if your admitted, which is a challenge in itself! So biggest congratulations on your admittance! :slight_smile: It really comes down to the place you want to live and the financial package. Academics is kind of an unnecessary variable as both schools are prominently strong in academics. Do you like NC, or NJ? Both are insanely different, I advise you to visit both campuses. Personally, in my opinion, I like NJ better, but that’s because I grew up in NY and was a city girl so its up to how you like the culture and who’s going to give you the most money.</p>

<p>This post is from April 2011. I think the OP’s made hir choice.</p>

<p>^purpleacorn lol sorry didn’t realize the date, but who’s to say someone else won’t go on this thread and benefit from the information?</p>
