Hello, I’m an American living abroad. I would be starting college in 2020 and I’d prefer to pursue studies back home. I currently live with a single parent and their parent and being supported by them. EFC is 0. Parents are divorced and NCP isn’t cooperative and is useless. I’d basically need a full tuition or full ride to the college. I intend to pursue business. I’m aware schools back home are insanely expensive but so is the situation in the state I’m living in. Please help me in finding colleges with either automatic or competitive full tuition/full ride scholarships and don’t require NCP info as the NCP strategically pounced into the picture to ruin my chances of waiver.
Did you take the PSAT? what is your GPA and SAT or ACT scores? There are a number of schools that may be close to free, depending on your grades and scores. Look at schools in Nevada, Kansas, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Oklahoma. Unpopular states and locations need good students, and offer good students scholarships, and the definition of good, is more or less middle of the road for many public business programs-

If you study accounting at U of Wyoming, there are thousands of jobs in Colorado waiting for you.
Colorado cannot find enough accountants, especially tax accountants. I don’t know if you
are suited to accounting, however, or if you are willing to live in the rocky mountain west.
Another way, move to NYC get a job, and eventually go to CUNY, City College of NY.
Some of the business programs in CUNY
are inexpensive and you can work your way though a top education at CUNY.
Many good scholarships have a requirement that you go to high school in that state to qualify,
but in case you have a US state residency–
Look for Promise programs here, these are programs where most of the costs are covered,
may depend on your state residency and other requirements-
http://www.ahead-penn.org/creating-knowledge/college-promise/search
The state of Tennessee has a well known free college program along with many other states.
There will be residency requirements,so you may want to find a state, a job and establish residency.
Its a very good time to find a job in the USA now, but read the rules carefully, as you may need
to have attended high school in Tennessee to qualify.
Finally U of Central Florida, it may be possible to go part time and work your way through that program.
Its in Orlando.
Here is a link to the U of Wyoming business related scholarships-
http://www.uwyo.edu/business/scholarships/index.html
The university sends a large number of students to work in Denver, Colorado Springs,
and Fort Collins, and has a strong alumni network in the state of Colorado, where there are plenty of jobs.
Its located in Laramie, which is a town at 7000 feet above sea level, in the Snowy Range. Laramie is 64 miles
from Fort Collins Colorado.
Almost all students at U of Wyoming get substantial financial aid.
One other option to explore is community colleges, if you do not get enough financial aid from a 4 year college.
Since you have a 0 EFC, how much can your family contribute towards college? If not much or nothing, you may not be able to go to school here.
Don’t forget, you’re going to have expensive travel costs PLUS expensive health insurance costs. Those alone will add about $4k-5k per year to your costs. Plus personal expenses.
If I were you I wouldn’t try community colleges because you won’t get enough funding to transfer. You need to start out at a 4 year that will give you substantial merit or need based aid.
Work on getting the best GPA and ACT/SAT scores. Those will be huge helps.
DePauw also gives good aid.
What is your major and career goal?
Possibly @mom2collegekids can help with respect to automatic tuition scholarships to business schools located in Alabama such as at the University of Alabama, Auburn University & UAH.
@ManFromNeptune: Your efforts should be directed toward earning the highest grades possible in your coursework & doing well on the SAT and/or ACT.
Also, check out the University of Arizona & Arizona State University with respect to cost & scholarships.
Can you provide some more info ? Which state/city do you prefere ? And which specialty do you like ?
@BeeSting, I don’t have any preference for state as I cannot be picky due to my needs. Probably not in Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico. Finance/Economics major in Business.
@mom2collegekids, my family cannot contribute anything towards college. Colleges in the state that I live are nearly if not equally expensive. Major would be something mentioned just in above lines. Career goal is high finance.
@Coloradomama, I haven’t taken PSAT as I wasn’t aware of it until currently, now I’m a senior. Here they don’t have GPA system but if we convert it should be a perfect 4.0. I’ve already taken SAT and scored 1600 new edition. Would you suggest me to also take SAT Subject tests?
So family can’t contribute ANYTHING, so a “full tuition” scholarship is not going to help you. How would you pay for room, board, books, fees, personal expenses, travel and health insurance (about $17k-19k per year total)
“Full ride scholarships” usually do not include travel costs, particularly international travel, and none include health insurance.
The schools where you live may have similar costs BUT, at least if you went there you wouldn’t have to find ways to pay for international travel and expensive healthcare insurance. That’s a savings of about $5k per year right there.
What country do you live? Does it offer any sort of financial aid to attend colleges there?
Hi! You might want to check out:
Denison University (they are REALLY good with aid and merit scholarships, according to my college counselor)
Miami University (if you are able to get a 33+ act, they guarantee half to full tuition).
I hope this helps!
Also look into outside scholarships (scholarships you can apply to online). You could look into the Coca Cola scholarship ($20,000), etc. Some scholarships online require essays, and some do not.
@bonjour1, can a person outside the US apply for the outside scholarships? Also, I heard that they are just like winning a lottery ticket and is usually a waste of time hunting for them, is it true?
Hi–you should look at University of Mane at Orono as it’s offering lots of scholarships. The costs are very affordable and it’s basically a safety school – https://umaine.edu/business/
Also – how about Germany? They are offering free tuition to all students in many of the unis there –
https://www.daad.de/deutschland/studienangebote/studiengang/en/?a=result&q=°ree=&courselanguage=&locations=&admissionsemester=&sort=name&page=1
They also offer classes for how to speak German. Many of the schools offer programs where the instruction is in English.
Prestigious schools that don’t require NCP info are U of Chicago and Vanderbilt.
Most CSS schools will be off the table, as you know, because of uncooperative NCP and it doesn’t sound like you will be eligible for a waiver.
Some state schools where your 4.0/1600 SAT would gain you generous auto-merit are Alabama-Tuscaloosa, Alabama-Huntsville, New Mexico, and Arizona State U (Barrett Honors).
There are LACs where you might get full tuition but most do not offer business degrees.
Good luck - those stats should translate into some options, although it’s a bit late in the game to be applying for merit money at some places.
@ManFromNeptune you’d have to check each individual scholarship to see if someone outside of the US could apply, since the rules for each scholarship are different.
As for the lottery aspect, that’s not quite true for EVERY scholarship! For the ones where you enter in your name and it’s a random drawing, yes. But for the ones where you have to write an essay, etc., the winners are not randomly picked—they are picked based on their essay/whatever they submitted, depending on the scholarship contest.
For help finding these scholarships, you could look on the following websites:
https://www.fastweb.com
https://www.chegg.com/scholarships
Also, you could also reach out to NextGenVest for a Money Mentor. Their services seem to be 100% free, and they help students figure out how to pay for college, find scholarships applicable to them, recommend them affordable schools for their situation, etc. They can even help you negotiate financial aid packages with a school if it is not enough aid. (See: https://www.nextgenvest.com/blog/2017/11/18/6-ways-money-mentors-can-help-you).
Here is the website: https://www.nextgenvest.com
@bonjour1, appreciate for telling me about NextGenVest, it sure is awesome but what state should I enter during signup since it lists only US territories and phone number?
@ManFromNeptune I’m not sure, but since you mentioned you’re an American living abroad, perhaps use the state that you were born in? You could also ask them this question and ask which state to use when signing up, through this link: https://www.nextgenvest.com/contact
The Ohio State University is a FAFSA only school, as an out of state applicant (US citizen) you’d be eligible for their Morrill or Eminence competitive full rides. http://undergrad.osu.edu/cost-and-aid/merit-based-scholarships
Fisher College of Business https://fisher.osu.edu/
You can see the list of CSS schools and whether they require NCP info at the college board website of participating institutions. Make sure to recheck before applying because schools may change their policies by next year’s cycle.
https://profile.collegeboard.org/profile/ppi/participatingInstitutions.aspx
here’s a link to a regionally prestigious program (midwest) that typically includes tuition & R&B. It’s hard to get into, but doesn’t require your other parent’s info… . Fafsa only. https://raikes.unl.edu
If I get into Raikes, will I have a BS in CS and BS in Management? Can I double major with Finance along with Raikes program? Is that possible?
@BuckeyeMWDSG , thanks a lot for sharing about OSU! If you can, can you provide me statistics related to being awarded the Eminence and Morril Scholarships?
