Help me find more colleges! REJECTED from #1.

I am trying to major in Business or Psychology. I live in Virginia, but not NOVA technically- Stafford for all you VA heads. In-state preferred.

GPA: 3.82 Weighted (class rank: 55/389) :-X i know this went up though because the first semester was already over for 2 of my classes. Transcript is meh, I have like 2 Cs I think on there, but both are in AP classes...if that matters.

SAT:

first time:

1990 (680 writing, 670 Math, 640 Reading, 11 essay)

second time:

2060 (610 CR, 800 M, 650 W, 8 essay)

basically best combo is 2120, 800M, 640R, 680W.

SAT IIs coming soon, just took 'em today, both Maths should be good but I think US History won't be that great.

Our grading scale is pretty tough, no weights for honors classes. AP is out of 5.0 scale. 98-100 is A+, 94-97 is A, 90-93 is B+, 86-89 is B, 82-85 is C+...etc. I think the scale is relatively tough compared to my friends' schools.

Academic Achievement Award- (GPA >3.5) (9, 10, 11)
Academic Letter- (maintaining GPA>3.8 for 5 semesters) (11)

DECA (12)
High School Literary Magazine (12)
Vacation Bible School volunteer (summer 2006) in Wilmington, Delaware- assisting children from as young as pre-Kindergarten to 6th grade for a week

Work Experience (just copied verbatim from what i put on the college apps, sorry if it sounds haughty):

In terms of work experience, I am a self-employed online entrepreneur. I typically purchase and resell/invest in products on the internet for up to/over $2000 profit each week, my best being a 1600% return. It gives me a variety of skills, including and not limited to time management, customer service, consumer relations, photography, web development, promotion, selling, and insight into the business and entrepreneurial world. I have also begun to sell products for other people, as a consignment service.

AP World History 10
Honors English 10

I began taking high school credit math courses in the 7th grade...so I believe I have 6 HS math credits.

Colleges Applying To/Considering (in rank of choice)

University of Virginia (doing Early Decision) REJECTED- can I apply again? is that even allowed? I wasn't even deferred, just straight up REJECTED. My sis goes to UVA too.
College of William and Mary
University of Maryland-College Park
University of Delaware
Drexel
Fordham (well, the application fee was free for me!)
maybe Tech now since I got rejected from UVA...

I am also a year ahead, because I skipped a grade. This was included in an essay I wrote for UVA.

My essays were supposedly good according to my AP English teacher. Did not read the recommendation.

I guess I have to consider some lower end schools in VA for safeties (George Mason, maybe VCU). And seriously does anyone see how I am just way too underqualified to not even be deferred at UVA?

The truth hurts, but I'll be ready for it. Thanks in advance.

You might want to consider JMU too. I am very surprised that you were rejected from UVA b/c your gpa and your SAT scores are very good and you are instate. My guess is that the 640 verbal was a little low for UVA, but it is still in the midrange.

Some schools to consider:

Ithaca College
New York University
Northeastern University
Penn State - University Park
Temple University
University of Connecticut
University of Pittsburgh

NolanDW:

You may have noticed that UVA's percentage in the top 10% of high school class is very high. Take out athletes, URMs, and a few kids from exceedingly competitive high schools in NOVA, and I suspect it would be in the 95%+ range. I've seen interviews with Jack Blackburn where he came right out and said that he wasn't very impressed by kids from high schools where there were 30 kids who did better. I don't agree with Blackburn, but there you have it.

I suspect your class rank just wasn't high enough, and Stafford schools are not NOVA schools. And if 20 other kids who are ranked higher than you applied from your high school, well ... I think you can see the issue.

Can you apply again? Not with an outright rejection. You may be able to appeal. Call the admissions office to find out.

As for other schools in VA, you're in luck!!! Very, very few states in the country have as many great colleges as VA.

Here are some of my favorites in addition to the ones you named or others have named here.

Mary Washington: Has great kids, a great campus, and is as close as any public school can be to a good liberal arts school.

Richmond: Very good private school.

Randoph-Macon Women's College: One of the more intellectual atmospheres in the state, I would say.

Hollins or Sweet Briar: Both underrated.

Out of state but near:

Dickinson
Gettysburg
Elon

Good luck!

^thanks for some additional suggestions. i am a male by the way.

You look at Indiana?

i'm male and i got a letter from Randolph-macon and on the envelope it said "Randolph-Macon Women's College" followed by a sticker that said "And Men!!"

It was pretty funny.

Yes. As I recall, RMWC is going to admit men. I don't know if that will be for fall 2007 or not. They're also planning to change their name, but no one knows what the new name will be.

Wow. My friend had lower stats and got in.

What does your guidance counsellor say about the reason for you not getting accepted ED? Was your GC surprised? Shocked? If top 14% is not good enough, then so be it, but I think the question should at least by asked, and if the GC won't make the call then do it yourself.

^i'm not sure. i'll have to go see her tomorrow; i found out about not being accepted on friday after school.

Its the class rank. Top state schools are very focused on class rank. If you really want UVA my advice is to go to another school and transfer. My bet is you'll get in if you do well enough first semester.

As for chances:
College of William and Mary: 45% Shot
University of Maryland-College Park: In
University of Delaware: In
Drexel: in
Fordham: In
VTech: In

I think you need to aim higher. I would add a couple schools like Wisconsin and maybe even Michigan.

Did you learn anything today from your GC or UVA? Apparently they were inviting calls today, although they expect most of the calls to be from deferred students.

http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/

They prefer to hear from the students, but:

On Monday morning, we'll start taking what we call "decision calls". The calls will almost exclusively be from parents and they will primarily be about students who were deferred.

I placed a call just now. The lady who answered was nice (ahem, UVA admissions office, I know you can see this) Funny thing is the lady who answered was like "I know who this is..." after I said my name because my UVA rejection posts on CC had been floating around.

She said basically I was straight up rejected because of 2 Ds on my transcript and a C in BC Calc in Junior Year. I guess those Ds really did hurt (one on AP World History 10, one on AP Latin Virgil). Strange, because I thought since they were AP classes they would show up as Cs and Bs on the transcript (even though that isn't much better) since our school weights them 1 grade. I honestly could blame the D on just ONE assignment in world history (tip: never use Ice Cube's music, even censored, in a project- the judges will be intimidated and disqualify you). That was a big factor- even though I really don't like to blame anything on anyone else but myself or make any excuses.

Bottom line I learned I guess is to not take challenging courses if you can't handle them and if you think it isn't going well, drop it or change the course, because it's gonna bite you in the butt. Not even being in-state, skipping a grade, getting 800 on the Math SAT I, having a sister who goes to the school, attending the school's summer camps, or making a business that makes $2000 a week by the age of 16 could save me, and the decision is final. It's a shame because I didn't fulfill my potential, and my "potential" wasn't enough.

I guess I will further have to consult my guidance counselor about the transcript and re-think about where I'm gonna apply with those "Ds" (or should I say "Cs"?) on there. I'm not feeling too good about William and Mary now.

Oh well. Good luck to those who have gotten in to where they want. For some reason I feel relieved right now because I have a concrete answer, and I'm glad the admissions office at UVA was upfront about it.

Now, further suggestions are welcomed on where to apply...

Nolan:

My friend, these decisions are pretty arbitrary, OK? I suspect those particular Ds hurt you because they're not highly technical subjects. In other words, they're the kinds of subjects you could ace with enough work. Right?

The lesson is not "don't take tough courses." The lesson is to take tough courses and get good grades in them. If you had gotten Bs in lesser courses, you might still have been rejected because you didn't challenge yourself with the tough courses, n'est pas?

The thing is, when competing for admission at highly selective schools, you have to look better than other candidates who also want in. Other transcripts, for whatever reason, just looked better than yours.

I would seriously consider Mary Wash. Honestly. It's a very fine school and you can transfer later if you want, but you might not want to.

Good luck.

Nolan, dont worry about it bro. You are a good guy that any school would be lucky to have. No reason you shouldnt have gotten in, but you can always transfer later if you want. If it makes you feel better, I too got rejected by my state school (University of Pittsburgh) with ONE C (or lower) on my transcript. Granted, I didnt do as well as you did, but I understand what youre going through. Hang in there.

everyone is telling you class rank, i dont think so much, i was around 65 in a class of about 540 and i applied ed and was accepted

Try Berkeley or UCLA!!

For psych, try Clark U, in Worcester, MA.

you make $100k a year selling things on the internet?
