Help Me Identify Match Colleges Please

Hello

Recently, I spoke with a counselor about my college prospects, and I left the discussion more confused and lost than ever.

note: Please don't feel that I am a self-deluded snob who has been disillusioned after reality smacked me in the face. The "talk" did not burst my bubble, nor did it render my pride fatally wounded. Right now I am just, like I said, clueless. :)

Before the "talk," I thought UCSD was a match.

Then, all the advice I have been getting tells me that UC Santa Barbara is a match, UCLA is a high reach, and my safety is a California state college. So it seems like I had no idea how to decide what match schools are. :P

Final Question: Can you please tell me the colleges that I match, at best? Thank you so much!

$4,000 for a college counselor?

Due to the consideration of the essay, UCs are not perfectly predictable based on grades and test scores. But with your grades and test scores indicate a decent chance at UCLA, and a reasonably good chance at the UCs less selective than UCLA. It appears that the $4,000 counselor want to make sure that you have a very safe safety (e.g. UCR, UCM, or a CSU other than CPSLO).

If you need safeties to be cheap, also consider the following:

To those still wondering why I posted this if I already have a counselor, it’s because he/she told me to come up with a list of matches.

any input/tips are still highly appreciated! :)

Your private counselor has to keep stats on the students who got in to their top choice and what percent they got in to. Therefore, they often only want you to apply to schools where things are 100%. I think you should go for UCSB if that is what you want. I think you are an automatic admit. There is a page off their admissions site that explains automatic admits, which includes test admits.

Also, my parents paid for a private counselor too for me at one point. They are very ticked too. With my stats, I could go to most great schools. I probably wouldn’t get in to Yale, but still plenty of great schools. My stats are similar to yours, except that my SAT is 2090. My PSAT is 216. Anyway, the counselor came back with schools like Oklahoma school of science and technology and something in Louisiana called Louisiana Centerary or something. I do not recall the exact name.

Have you looked at the Naviance scattergrams for your high school? It’s a little tricky for the UCs because Naviance uses the school GPA, which can differ significantly from the UC GPA. What did your high school college counselor say?

Why would your parents pay that kinda money, or any money, just to get advice about state schools? You go to a private, so you should have a decent GC to get advice from. What does your GC say–, he knows where kids from your school get in better. A cheaper strategy would have been to just apply to all the UC’s, only one application. I’m sure you will get into one. That’s really money down the toilet. Are you getting advice on private schools too?

I don’t think anyone should ever consider UCSD a match school. Now you will have to throw an ap or 2 into a CSU. As long as you have money to burn, just check all the boxes when you apply to UC’s. Then you will have a chance to think over where you’d like to go when you get your admissions. No need to come up with a list of matches.

P.S. I’d fire that adviser now and get whatever refund is allowed in the contract

Undecided,

Your tests scores are excellent but I don’t think that they are as high as you think they are for very competitive schools. I think your test scores are typical of all applicants to competitive schools. I’m not trying to detract from your accomplishment at all. They are very good scores but most applicants to selective schools will have scores in this range. Unless they are a recruited athlete.

Where is this page? There is a page describing minimum eligibility requirements, but meeting them does not mean that you will be automatically admitted.

@flyeagle17 we are all Asians at my hs.

Should I include RISD as a high match or is it a reach?

A 2320 SAT is definitely not average in any high school. It is at the top 2%.

@xtremepower My school is just weird ok? 1/3 of the people in my class bring in their laptops, play league of legends, and still get 2390.

I think that for UC’s, your UC gpa is much more important than your test scores, assuming that you have decent scores, really high ones may not really give you a lot of edge.

RISD is a specialized school and is a reach for everyone. You don’t get in on just grades and test scores. They are going to be looking at your portfolio.
