Hi everyone, this is the first time I posted on CC cause right now im really depressed. I think Im doing good with SAt but the first time I took the SAT (Oct 2014) I got a low score. I was sad but then I retook it in Dec 2014 and today I got the score, IT WAS EVEN LOWER. I dont know what is happening anymore, this is the second time. I dont know what I missed during my study, when I do test at home, I do fine. But when I take the real tests, though I have no stress or pressure, I screw it up all the time. Now im feeling hopeless.....I can accept failure and stand up, but this is the second time, in 2 months....What can I do now????

First, don’t panic. Are you a senior or just a junior? If junior, you’ve got plenty of time. And how low is low? What was the CR+M score? That’s what really matters. If you’re a junior, you’ve got time to try ACT - and time to try another approach to SAT. I know plenty of people who have gone up 200 or 300 points with prep. There are also plenty of Test Optional schools. Good luck.

thank you for replying. im a senior, I got 1350 the previous time CR+M combined but now it’s 1270. I really need to get a 1400. I messed up with math the whole time and the curve was harsh also. Do you have any advices for the math section? thank youu so muchh

1350 is about 90th percentile. Those are not low scores!

but i want to improve that… like you do well on the preparation but fail on the real test. I want to know if anyone is having the same problem and how to fix it. Im trying hard to firgure out what I have missed but I cant come up with anything

One important thing for math is that read every question two times and the second time should be after you solve the question. Besides, underline the important parts of the question. Honestly it prevents any stupid mistake and it raised my score for 100 points. Try Grubers if you’re not very good in math. If you’re good try Dr. Chung. Also, make sure you understand every single question you get wrong. Barron’s is good for practicing if you know the concepts. You can easily improve your score with a little practice.

1350 is not horrible. What was break-down M and CR? Is this Super Scoring the two sittings? Did you ever take subject tests? If so, if you did well on Math 1 or Math 2 that will help. But 1350 two–part will put you in the running for merit money at many schools. I don’t know how much time you’ve got to take again. Are the schools you’re applying to open to taking January scores? If so, you could take again, but you’ll really have to cram … Dr. Chung is good. Where are you thinking of applying? Do your scores put you between the 25 - 75 range? Sorry for so many questions!

Im an international student so i may take a gap year. if i can make it this year, its perfect, if not, there’s nothing to be disappointed. I just worry about my SAT as I dont see any progress but only problems. I just took SAT 2 times so there’s no superscoring. thats my sat score in Oct, and Dec was just 1270 combined… I was really really shocked. that’s what makes me so perplexed. I mean when you are pretty confident about your score and BOOMM you got a ridiculous low one…that’s so scary
P/s haha you dont have to sorry for your questions, in fact i feel a lot more better when at least somebody in the world talking to me when im so down like this

@Hibari291 I’m an international student too and I took a gap year. It’s a great idea. Although I still didn’t do well on my SAT I improved A LOT, so good luck!

Are you an international attending a US high school or are you attending high school in a non-English speaking country?

I’m going to be honest - your English could use some work. Your OP had several errors that are typical of non-English speakers. I suspect that you are hitting your SAT score ceiling because this is as high as your English will allow.

With only the information available on this thread, not knowing what your subscores are or anything, my advice would be either 1) Accept that this is the score you have, apply to universities/colleges and go to the best fit that accepts you or 2) Take a gap year and work on your English, in addition to doing something productive that will show universities/colleges that you have grown as a person.

@smilyowl good luck to you too =)))) hope you all the best
@bouders yes im attending a high school in a non-English speaking country. my english is not very well but I believe I can work better on SAT. thank you so much but I think i wont give up on it

Don’t worry, I did that too. I scored high-ish in my first sitting, then did worse on my second. I didn’t really have time to retake the tests, and I didn’t want to anymore (which probably explains why my second score is lower). Make sure that you’re in a really good mind set going into the test. And try to practice with different study aids this time. If you worked with a Princeton Review book, try Barrons or Kaplan this time (they tend to be harder). If there is anything else I can say, you’re going to be fine. Your scores are pretty good and I’m sure you are a well rounded student. Highlight that in your application. Aim for your goals (school wise) but don’t forget to have some fallbacks. I know it sounds like nothing you want right now, but you’d be surprised, once you get acceptance to a school (even your fallback schools) everything feels better. You’re a lot more content than before. So don’t be depressed :)
