Help me love Haverford

Hooray, @dla26 ! Great choice.

Thanks @Proudpatriot and @OldbatesieDoc - this is exactly the info I was wondering about. My D already does weight training in her sport but I like hearing that they take great care at Haverford to develop the athletes and support them. Knowing her and what you both say, it seems like it would be a great fit for her. We are going up in a few weeks so hopefully it’s a good visit.

congrats to your daughter @dia26! She’ll love it at Haverford! My son graduated in 2016, and although it was not his first choice, he still loved the experience there and received an excellent education. I agree with everything everyone else said about the school previously - it is truly a unique place.

And I love that kids are still enjoying Nerd House since my son was one of the founding members in 2013! It was only supposed to be a one year thing since the house was a themed house that changed yearly. But it was so popular that it’s still around!
:x

Then my daughter owes your son a huge debt of gratitude, since she is hoping to live in Nerd House someday. She’s big into D&D, cosplay, graphic novels, etc. She’s actually a little worried about the idea of living in Nerd House, since she may wind up spending all of her time playing D&D and letting her grades slip!

@dia26 I’ll relay the message to him - he’ll love it!! He even visited Nerd House the year after he graduated because he was still living in the area. It’s where all the “nerds” hang out! LOL!

The house was really set up as a themed house, and groups of kids had to apply every year with their ideas for a theme in order to live there. There were 2 or 3 groups applying that year, but my son’s group got picked. The first year, they didn’t have much money because nothing was funded by the college, but when they realized how popular it was, the college started helping out. Then they could throw more parties and events. My son’s really happy that Nerd House is still around. It’s sort of like his legacy.
;))

Please come back and let us know how she does. My son’s dream school is Princeton but we both feel this will be such a great fit for him. Your concerns are very similar to ours so I would love to hear all the good, the bad and the ugly lol. Congratulations!!

hey there. just saw your post. Wondering how it turned out for your daughter. My son is looking for 2020. For him, the honor code REALLY spoke to him.

@dhtchK my daughter is 2020 too! Haverford is one of 7 on her list, but not one that we have visited yet since it doesn’t have a lake! I still think it sounds she would love the crowd there, but we will see. Let me know if you want me to pm you so we can chat privately!

I apologize that I neglected to follow up on this thread. My daughter got in, and she’s very excited! I’m very happy for her. She’ll be going on the pre-orientation backpacking trip (PCOP?), so we’re going to head out to the campus about a week early to get her set up. She’ll be living in Tritton, which looks to be a relatively newly constructed (2012) dorm. That dorm is all singles, which is a huge luxury for a freshman. Ironically, though, she actually wanted a roommate!

One funny thing about the PCOP trip is that when they sent her the recommended packing list, they included some poetry about the outdoors. I guess they’re going to discuss the poems around a campfire. Definitely seems like her kind of place.

That’s great and congrats to your daughter! My daughter is going to campus early for a different pre-orientation thing. She ended up in Barclay and had definitely hoped for Tritton- it’s the only dorm with air conditioning! My D has a single
On a two person suite, which she loved the idea of, but it seems that the actual suite-mate may not be a very good match for her. She is all ready to make the best of it though!

Is it the social justice one? My daughter was also interested in that but had heard back from PCOP first and had committed by then. She’d also done a bunch of social justice stuff (ACLU Summer Institute, etc.), so she decided the backpacking trip would be a new experience.
My daughter had no expectations about dorms. It was only after she got Tritton that we looked it up and found that it’s the newest one. The rooms are apparently smaller than most other dorms, though.
The roommate match is always the tricky bit. I remember my freshman year roommate was really…strange. It made me appreciate my singles all the more once I became an upperclassman. A 2-person suite is great, though, since she can spend as much or as little time with her roommate as she wants.

No, my daughter found the social justice institute interesting, but she had committed to the Horizons program. I bet they’re both going to love next year! I’ve been told they put a lot of thought into hall/customs groupings.
