Help me make sense of this! Unsual Application Circumstances- Just Got "Deferred" today

<p>(Please bare with me, this is a doozy and I appreciate any insight.)</p>

<p>Heres the silly part-- It didn't have to be this way. I finished my application in plenty of time, submitted and payed for the application, and I swore I completed and pressed submit for my writing supplement</p>

<p>I got an email 4 days after saying that I my supplement hasn't been received; they admitted common app issues and were deciding wether or not to review me early action. </p>

<p>About a few weeks, before december decisions came out, the school emailed me stating that I was NOT being reviewed for early action. Despite frustration and disappointment, I would be reviewed regular. I was in the middle of a jazz band practice when I got my deferred email. (apparently there is a 'good deferral letter', please explain)</p>

However, our high application volume, coupled with the very strong credentials of our applicants in recent years, has contributed to an increasingly competitive admissions process. As a result, we are writing to inform you that your application is currently being deferred for further review.</p>

<p>While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, your application remains under consideration. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early April, 2014.</p>

<p>Strong fall semester or trimester grades may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require. <p>Please make me understand this because I am under the impression that I should have only heard in march/april anyway--did they just defer me because I payed and submitted my standard application for early and they had to give me a deferral? Even if i wasn't qualified, could they have rejected me?</p>

<p>Heres a few stats fyi; OOS.</p>

<p>GPA- Upward trend; EXTENDED ILLNESS freshman year explained in college essay/ desire to become doctor-- was on home and hospital
3.71 UW
5.31 W (Through junior year, straight As junior year 3 Aps and Straight As Mid Year ( 5 APs) ( they already should have received my 1st quarter grades)</p>

<p>ACT 32 (33 Eng,30 Math,31Reading,32Science ) 11 writing</p>

<p>Strong Musical/Leadership/Recs</p>

<p>Notable awards:
Ap scholar with honor
john phillip sousa
2 time all county jazz band</p>

<p>ECs, multiple county/state music awards/lobbied in state congress blah blah..</p>

<p>Tell me anything to help me get perspective on why and how I got deferred.</p>

<p>I am not sure I understand your question. Are you wondering why you were deferred? It is hard to tell. Most applicants with your credentials are deferred in the EA period. I know 8 students who applied EA to Michigan this year. 7 of them had perfect 4.0 GPAs taking advanced classes (IB or A Level) and SAT/ACT scores in the 2000+/30+ range. Generally speaking, OOS and international students are facing very stiff competition these days. It has become quite common for applicants to get into schools like Cornell, Northwestern and Penn and get rejections from Michigan. If you are a resident of Michigan, your chances are definitely better.</p>

<p>There are a couple of explanations. This confusion might be because you had applied early, then were moved into the RD pool. They may have sent this e mail out to all students who were moved to RD because they were deferred, and yours was included in that list. The computer list would not distinguish your situation from the EA students who were moved to RD.</p>

<p>Or, for some reason, due to the Common App issues, your application did end up in the EA list, and the person reviewing it made the decision. I am not an admissions officer, but you have strong scores, and a lower GPA. You are a strong student with a credible explanation for the grades (sorry you were sick) and an upward trend. It is possible that they wanted to see how you did this year before making a decision. In this case, you would be deferred. It is possible that you could have been rejected, and so it is good that you are still being considered. </p>

<p>Computer errors happen, and with the Common App problems this year, it doesn’t surprise me that this kind of thing happens. I think if there is an error that would hurt a student’s chance of admissions, the college would be willing to correct it. This looks like you are in the RD pool where you thought you were- or you got an early review. If you have concerns, I think the college would be willing to answer your questions.</p>

I think that I have a fighting chance and hopefully my(or the computers) mistake wont hinder my chance at the acceptance email.</p>

<p>Has your mid-year report been sent to Michigan yet by your college counselor? Getting your first semester grades to your admissions file would be the most important thing you can do at this point.</p>

<p>Agree with siliconvalleymom - get those first semester grades sent if you have not done so and let UofM know they have been sent.</p>
