"Thank you for your application to the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for the Fall 2007 term. Your application has recieved an individualized and comprehensive evaluation and has been deferred for a final decision until a later date. Your application will be re-evaluated on a regular basis, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this year's freshman applicant pool.

We expect to receive more than 25,000 applications from first-year applicants for a class of about 5,400. This requires us to use a very selective process to manage our enrollment. All admissions decisions will be made no later than mid-April, 2007. If a final decision is not made on your application prior to completion of your fall semester grades, please ask your high school conselor to foward the grades when they are available. Strong fall semester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants.

If you are offered admission prior to completing your fall semester grades, it is your responsibility to academically perform at the same standard as you did in your 10th and 11th grade classes. A decline in grades during your senior year could put at risk your opportunity to enroll as a freshman.

Please refer..blahblahblahblhalhblhah"

Now what's interesting about this letter is that I didn't get a decision on Wolverine Access so how could I have already recieved a mailed letter? Also I don't even think they recieved my ACT retake scores from Oct 28th yet so how could they have made a decision. I was told by my specific admissions conselour that a decision wouldn't be made unless it was an acceptance without my Oct 28th scores (if I indicated I would be taking it on my application, which I did).

Secondly, the 2nd part about "If you are offered admission prior to completing your fall semester grades" means that I could recieve a decision BEFORE Jan? That doesn't make any sense to me becuase I thought deferred students recieved decisions in April.

BTW, is this the good or bad deferral letter?

Well, it looks like you are deferred. I'm surprised it's not on Wolverine Access. So you still have just the 2 links at Wolverine Access?

Since Michigan handles applications in batches, your application may just go on to the next batch and then the next batch, etc. until they come to a decision on your application. This is how they used to do it and it sounds like they still do it this way.

So you may get in earlier than April. I would not count on it and would look at other schools just in case.

And an increase in your ACT can only help you. At some point, they may ask to see your senior year grades (it looks like they will want to see them), so keep them up.

Good luck.

PS I just saw your stats on another thread. They are very good. If Michigan doesn't work out (and it still may), I'm sure you will get into a good school.

Hmm that's kind of disappointing. I thought I'd get in even though I was borderline (3.6 UM GPA, 31 ACT, 32 Retake, with really good EC's - look in my previous posts) because I had alumni status and my friend with a 3.6 and 28 got in.... :/

Did everyone you know apply to LS&A? Each school handles admit decisions differently and, of course, the date that all app materials were received is important for rolling.
I extend my sympathies as S. was a deferred double legacy last admissions cycle (School of Kines). It sucks, no other way to describe it. It was a 6-month wait for a decision...not until mid-April. During that time, he gave up on U-M and made other plans. The process drains the enthusiasm out of the most loyal of candidates. If it's any consolation, you'll have plenty of company in the deferral pool (pull up last year's threads). This seems to be the trend in enrollment management at Michigan, heavy reliance on deferment and wait listing.

I'm sorry that happened to you zkevin, but don't take it the wrong way. They didn't say you were rejected or even waitlisted, they are just putting off the decision. Make sure that your fall semester grades are great, and you should be in. I agree with you that it is BS, your credentials seem quite good, which is why I am saying that you should be optimistic about getting in. I would, of course, have a back up, just in case.

Hmm intresting, people are getting mailed deferral letters (from decisions made on Nov 17th). Friend just got deferred too with a 3.6 and 29...guess it makes me feel slightly better even though I'm alumni and had better stats -.-

3-4 people from our school got in with 26s on their ACTs.

zkevin, if they don't want you, then you don't need them. You should have gotten in, and that is basically all there is to it. What were the adcomms smoking?

Do you have any logical faults in your application? Did you get a D or a C somewhere? There might be something off about your application that made this happen.

maybe they just put you off right off the bat b/c they didn't have ACT scores?

Scores are important, but GPA is King. Stats for middle 50th percentile of this year's freshman class:
Unweighted high school GPA of 3.7–4.0
28% with a 4.0 GPA
52% with 3.9 or higher GPA

Also, don't forget that Michigan recalculates your GPA. When I applied a few years ago, my application stated that I had a 3.96-something UW GPA, but when Michigan recalculated it, I had a 3.92. (I saw it on my placement test results sheet at my orientation.)

I was deferred as well today without any link on wolverine access for a decision. I had a 26 act, 3.9 gpa, legacy, my dad is faculty, and i had 3 AP's so who the heck knows. I have gotten all A's so far this year so who knows what they will do. I know my ACT is a bit low but if they dont accept me my dad is putting in his resignation and looks like they wont have any more michigan legacy.

Honestly, legacy isn't a big deal in this process. Michigan loves the alumni, but they can't accept all of their kids. There are too many of them! If they did accept all of the legacies, no one else would be accepted. (I wouldn't be here.) I actually think its commendable of the admissions committee for what they're doing because it shows that they care more about the qualifications of the candidate than who the parents are.

My UM GPA is a 3.6 also and I did have one C+ in (H) CPC, which is by far the hardest course in our school. The average grade there is a C, with many many kids who got C's in that class and still got into schools at UM's level or higher. Also they already had my first ACT score (31) from in my junior year so I don't think not having ANY ACT score was it...

and my W GPA is a 4.1 by my own calculations since I took lots of Honors/APs

zkevin, we have very similar stats and I got in. I think you still have a strong chance, it SOUNDS to me like the "good" deferral letter but I'm not sure. Cases like this prove what a stupid crapshoot admissions can be.

And again, Wasabi, it is clear why you were deferred...your ACT is MORE THAN "a little" low.

not quite becuase there are people i know that have gotten in with 26's and 27's. You know if i was black i would have gotten in with that because thats how our wonderful society would have worked. In fact i would have gotten a full ride like a black kid at my school who does not need it at all and comes from a very rich family just like myself. thank god proposal 2 passed.
