Help me narrow down my colleges

To Cre8tive1:

What do you mean that you share the "campus" with all those other schools...?

How would u rate the social life?

I hope that you'll still visit Rowan for yourself. I don't want my possible bias (from the visit) to cloud your reasoning. Maybe you might like it?

I feel you on the Rutgers/Temple thing. Maybe we'll see each other on campus! Temple is top 3 for me.

NJCU...I tried to check it out but after I heard the 4- and 6 year grad rates I stopped. I don't know much about their academics, so this might just be bias again.

How about WPUNJ or any of the University of Pennsylvania (PASSHE) schools? They would probably make good safety schools. And they're not so bad.

If you don't want a commuter campus, living in NJ won't help you in your search. None of the schools really have adequate housing (Rutgers has COMMUNAL KITCHENS for gawd sake!), but I hear it doesn't hurt the campus feel...

Any other questions and I'll try my very best to answer them. :)

Have you looked at TCNJ? They have a more small-campus collegey feel than Rutgers, but I don't know if that's what you're looking for. They offer a minor in Journalism and a major in Communications.

What are your stats anyways? TCNJ may be a match if you have great stats.

Santo, Emerson does not have a campus, that giant park you see is city property, Emerson, Suffolk, Beacon Hill, FOX, and many other businesses make up the buildings that surround the park.

After reading what I said, I'm curious of what your image of Emerson, hoping that you don't think the Boston Common is actually Emerson property.

To Cre8tive1:

I have no problem with that. As long as the college is good. And besides, it being in the middle of a very popular city is not a bad thing. My question is though, how's the social life? Like, what do the students do on weekends and etc..

I glimpsed through TCNJ's website a while back and didn't pay much attention. Where is the campus located?

Social life...Emerson...not a party school, you go to BU for your parties, the school is an active community, and w/o the presence of a campus, they really emphasized on activities to bring the school together.

I'm not over exagerating when I say many students are shooting films together on their own time. countless clubs, magazines, literary journals, production organizations existo n camus. But for social life, your social life doesn't really exist witin the school, you are in the middle of Boston and 90% of your social life will exist outside of the school.

Oh iight. Thanks for clearing that up.

We saw both the Rose Hill campus (the Bronx) and Lincoln Center( NYC)

My D was impressed and is applying this fall. She liked Lincoln Center best and is majoring in English( possibly leading to journalism also.) The communications program sounds great. Many intrenships in NYC such as channel NBC right in the same area and many other opportunities like MTV and more.

Fordham consists of 3 campuses Lincoln Center, Rose Hill and Marymount in westchester County w/ a shuttle (the RamVan) that transports students to and from all 3 campuses. You can cross register in all campuses and use all the facilities at each.

Solid business, law and communications programs and rigorous liberal arts core.

By the way the dorms at NYC LC campus were top notch apt. suite style w/ nice views.

Many commuter students. Fordham awards merit based awards as well and a commuter refund too.( 5000$)

Good luck w/ your college apps this fall!

Thanks for the info luliztee.

I was going over the list with my dad and Ive been able to eliminate a few (with the help of all of you as well). Ive eliminated Rowan, Clark Atlanta, Mercy and possibly Emerson. I just feel that there are so many opportunities in NY and that Its not worth it (for me) to head out to Boston.

Another question:
Does anyone have any other reccomendations...how about the CUNY schools? Hunter, New York City College, Queens...would these be considered safety?

My gpa is about a 3.4 at the moment. I have yet to take the SATs.

The CUNY schools are commuter, and they are competitive to get into simply because too many people apply to NYC schools.

Also, how is Drexel in the ghetto, but Temple is not? Drexel is next to UPEnn, Temple has bars on the book store, with liquor stores and check cashing joints lining the streets!

Yea, ive seen some of the acceptance rates..

Well..any other suggestions, reccomendations in the NY or NJ area?

bumpin dis up...

My mom went to Emerson for journalism and she loved it! It's a great school for journalism if that is what you want to go into and it's right in Boston. Good luck!

I never said Temple wasn't in the ghetto. I said "get ready to walk in packs" which says something. But all in all it's a great school. Just walk fast. And actually I didn't say anything at all about Drexel being in the ghetto...I actually was saying it was disappointing. I just said the campus sucked. Badly. Unless you like concrete...

Andddd you're a good candidate for Rutgers and Temple. You'll most likely get into Temple. What are your SAT scores again?

TCNJ might be a slight reach, depending on what your other stats are. But it's (I hear) a great school.

Hey- we liked Temple too. There are just some people who don't do well in the city. There is no way my kid could survive in a rural type environment. So to each his own. Santo- have you checked out Montclair State??. They do have a communication program but I don't know how it compares to Rutgers or some of the other schools. It's an easy commute into NYC, so I believe internship possibilities would be possible. As others have mentioned-- CUNY has no dorms- the colleges were basically set up to meet the needs of NYC residents. As a life long NY'r, I would say Hunter, CCNY, Brooklyn and Queens are generally considered the stronger schools. But I don't know which would be best for journalism. Check out CUNY.edu for specific info on each school. I think SUNY Purchase has a creative writing program. That too may meet your needs. Good luck.

average sat at TCNJ is 1305. I think they are looking for oos students bcs almost everyone is from NJ (I think 95% of the students are from NJ). It is a beautiful school.

How far is TCNJ from NY?

To Marny:
I did browse through Montclair but since I didn't see that they were big on Journalism compared to the other schools, I didn't give it any attention.

Out of the CUNY schools, Ive looked into Hunter, CCNY and Queens.

TCNJ is in Ewing, so I would say an hour and a half?
