Which college is the best fit for me as a journalism major

Hey guys,

I am an international high school senior and since I currently live in Africa (no one really knows how to help me - not even my high school counsellor) so my last resort is to ask you guys here.

I applied to A LOT of universities because I felt very insecure about my SAT score and I felt that I was only going to receive rejection letters so yeah the list will be pretty long. I really want to pick a college within this 2 weeks because I want to pay my deposit and get this over with.

Little info on career goals:

First off, I want to major in journalism but I want to add a second major possibly Public relations since I want to work in PR if I couldn't make it in Journalism. However, I am also considering majors along the line of business, media, or political science. Anyways. Here is my college list (including scholarship packages) -- My top choices have a * next to them

1-Rutgers New Brunswick*
2-Stony Brook U *
3-University of Georgia * (However, I am a bit scared of racism there considering I am an international student because I won't be living on campus - I am white if it matters anyway)
4-UMiami (still waiting for scholarship offer, otherwise its TOO expensive)
5-Lynn U (Will cost $22k -Scholarship)
6-Hofstra (will cost $21k - I read very bad reviews on the school as a whole but the journalism program seems pretty good though)
7-Suffolk (Honors program and will cost $15k)
8-American University DC (Will cost $30k- scholarship)
9-Loyola Chicago (will cost $19k- scholarship)
10-Northeastern (not considering it as its too expensive)
11-Emerson (not considering it as its too expensive)
12- UMass- Amherst (will cost $20k because of scholarship)
13-SUNY Purchase (I don't really like this one)

Sorry THAT WAS LONG.

I really need some help though and your time and effort are greatly appreciated, really.

Note: The tuition I wrote down for each college is after the scholarship I receive and it does not cover dorms (I won't be dorming because I will live with my friends)

Thanks y'all!

Anyone?!

University of Georgia seems to have the best reputation for undergrad journalism. It’s included on several current top J-school ranking lists. I’d go there.

Most of your schools require freshmen to live on campus if they don’t live less than 80 km from campus.

Why would you be concerned about racism? That strikes me as peculiar. Doubly so if you are white.

It is very hard to compare costs, you don’t even put your tuition and fees in for some colleges. Even if you are off campus you still have costs, right? How do you happen to have friends to live with at all of these campuses?

Another vote for UGa. And don’t worry–they will love your accent.

Thank you everyone for your help and time.

BrownParent, I have been discriminated against on a daily basis back home for not being “too religious” and “not wearing a veil” so that’s why I have a huge concern on that topic. Also, I have plenty of friends going abroad for college and those are just some of the colleges that overlap (I lived in 14 countries for the past 17 years so I made friends from very different places and luckily it came to my benefit now). As for living costs, it will be cheaper to rent than dorm. I have already calculated that. Finally, thank you for you advice and concern it is greatly appreciated.

jaynarr: freshmen are typically required to live on campus. Even if it’s cheaper, it’s unlikely you’ll have a choice. Additionally, studies show it’s much better for them - it speeds up fitting in with college life, helps with better grades, greater involvement, etc.
In the US, nobody will care whether you wear a veil or not. Don’t worry about it.
If you can afford it, I would go with American. In addition to journalism, American offers tons of opportunities related to its location and networking will be key if you want to work in journalism. It’s also the best from your list in political science (among the tops in the country).
However it’s a hefty price tag, so if that’s a problem, UGA and Rutgers would probably be my second choices. Did you get into Honors at either?

Second that. Plus, I think you and your interests would fit in best in a world-class city like DC. My 2 cents.

Thank you I will consider AU as well. MYOS1634, I didn’t get into the honors program at either (My SAT score messed my file up a bit) - I only got into the honors program at Suffolk and Hofstra.

Thanks everyone! I greatly appreciate your help! x
