Hey Arcade, I remember reading your posts from the UCR forum a while back. I am sorta in your situation as well, though I go to SC. Also, I think I am enjoying myself more than you are :)

Anyways, I also kinda wonder what a safety/safe match would be for students like us. Would it be the mid tier UCs? We certainly are far and above the average transfer GPAs to these campuses, but I am not sure if that means we are safe. If anyone has an opinion, that would be cool.

I know you want to transfer because you don’t like UCR, but what is your number one reason for going somewhere else? Prestige?

Also, I’ve read many threads on here that would go against drek’thar’s advice to retake the SATs. Most people have said that time would be better spent on ECs, grades, or improving essays rather than studying a LOT to get a couple hundred points (at best) better on the SAT. I don’t know what the correct answer is. I am just putting that out there. Also, my first choice would be transferring to another UC, so I don’t really care if my SAT is not 2200, because UCs don’t look at SATs for transfer students.

How do you plan to approach your personal statement?

No, my main reason for transferring is definitely not prestige. My main reason is that I seriously do not like the city of Riverside, and honestly, I haven’t enjoyed my time at the school much at all. Also, it’s so close to my house (30 minutes) that I don’t feel like I’ve even moved out. I have definitely also thought about prestige and how it would help me a get a job though. But if I was accepted into Berkeley and UCSB, I might go to SB just because I love the environment.

Anyways, with a solid GPA, if you had all your prereqs done then the mid-tiers would probably be safeties. I probably won’t have all my prereqs done though, because there’s so damn many for computer science and each school has different requirements haha.

What is the personal statement? What are your reasons for transferring? For me, I’ll probably put emphasis on challenge level and intellectual environment, and also mention the actual city itself and why I don’t like living in the area. I probably don’t want to put too much emphasis on that last part though, as they might think that’s a bad reason for transferring.

cali trumpet -
im also curious as to why you want to transfer out of SC you say youve been enjoying yourself but you still wanna transfer?
im just curious because im transferring TO usc this fall so i wanna get more opinions from ppl whove been there
thanks and good luck!

I think that UCSB would be a great school for you. Your in state, so the price is very reasonable. Also, it has hot girls (important to you) and great academics and prestige. Nice sized, even though you could probably get into harder schools.

I definitely agree. I like UCSB and would be happy going there, but then again, that’s like the only school I’ve ever visited other than UCR and Cal Poly Pomona. If I get into Berkeley or LA, I’ll definitely go visit each and then my opinion might be a bit different.

p.s-thanks for pointing me out on the hot girls comment and making me seem like a shallow jerk! Just kidding…I did that to myself haha

Alright cool, I can definitely see why you don’t like the city of Riverside. I havn’t really been around the area, but it seems a lot of people on CC agree it is a lame area.

What makes you like UCSB? I only briefly went by there, but it looks pretty cool. Funny that you would choose SB over Berkeley, because if I got in, I would probably go to Davis over anywhere else as well.

I am wondering how you are going to incorporate your reasoning for transferring in your UC application. I know the common application actually asks directly “what is your reasoning for transfer,” but the UC app doesn’t make it so obvious. I too would bring up the same problems that you have such as the lack of intellectual environment, but I am a little afraid this wouldn’t come out right, so I am wondering if I should provide a reason for wanting to transfer at all.

Well one of my best friends goes to UCSB, so I’ve actually spent some time there. The environment is beautiful (it’s Santa Barbara!) and the people I met were all smart and funny. I have had a pretty limited sample of the school though, and I’d definitely like to take a tour and get a real feel for the school as well.

If the application doesn’t ask my reasons for transferring, then I won’t tell them, haha. No need to force something about why I dislike UCR if it doesn’t ask.

Pretty decent? You’re kidding, right? lol
Students rarely get in as transfers to HMC. Besides, they pick so few students even for freshman class that by the time a transfer student goes in, everyone’s already made friends. People know straightaway if one is a transfer student because everyone knows everyone. Fat chance getting in, too, at least for most people.

I don’t really feel like Harvey Mudd is a good fit for me. I feel like there is probably far too much of a math and science focus there (I love the stuff, but I’m also very interested in humanities/artsy stuff).

Yeah…it’s not really a big humanities school
Although, people there are actually good at humanities. They normally take those from one of the other Claremont colleges. But anywho, unless you’re crazy about math&science, HMC isn’t for everyone. :)

Hey! I’m applying as an international transfer student and I kinda need help figuring out which schools to apply for. Financial aid is very important and not a lot of schools offer aid to international transfer students. I’ll tell you my school record.

High school
10th: 85% in CBSE (I’m applying from India. CBSE is a tough educational board.)
12th: 92% in State Board (It’s a easier educational board)

Awards: “Individual Athletic Champion - Girls” in 9th and 10th.
Won a lot of small awards in sports.

ECs:
House Captain for two years - 9th and 10th.
Never did community work in school. We were not required to do community work. But I was in the “School Volunteers” group which basically helps out with the functioning of the school.
Was part of the dance team.

College
1st semester: GPA 8/10 (I know, sucks)
2nd semester: results not out yet.

Awards: I got the full tuition fee waiver award for all the four years which is merit based.

ECs:
Member of the Rotract club.
Member of the ISTE(Indian Society for Technical Education.)
I’m planning on doing community service too.

I know it’s not much. But ECs are difficult when you live 1 and 1/2 hours away from college and you have to approximately travel 3 hours everyday. The hostel is usually for out of state students.
