Help me pick some match and safety schools? :] i'll be your best friend

My stats:

white female
ACT: 30
SAT II Literature: 700
SAT II Latin: 640
Unweighted GPA : between 3.8 and 3.9 ( 4.0 at my school is nearly impossible, last year I had the highest GPA in my high school)

1 in class (reallyyy small school though)

taking most difficult courses available
even taking additional independent course in Civics

*was Secretary, now President of NHS
under my administration as the NHS is doing a ton more stuff than it ever has, i've gotten our chapter involved with multiple organizations, charities etc.
I'm very busy with the NHS (should i provide specifics for you?)
and NHS president is basically like student body president because
our school has so little in terms of EC's that are offered.

*part time job at Dairy Queen :) 23 hours a week

*I run cross country
dance (ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, modern) for 11+ years

*won a regional essay contest
won lots of in school essay contest
won lots of individual subject related awards within my school

*voted most artistic in school (probably not relevant haha)

I've made a lot out of the little that my school offers, and I'll go more in depth with that in my essays. and i hope to get stellar recommendations

I'm interested in doing pre-med, international relations, possibly journalism?

please help me figure out which schools are good matches for me in terms of my stats.
basically i have like 12 schools that i'm applying to but are probably reaches
so tell me if i'm way out of my league. My school doesn't have a guidance counselor so
i'm relying on your immense wealth of knowledge in all things admissions related =]

Johns Hopkins
Boston College
Georgetown
Duke
Vandy
Wake Forest
Dartmouth
Tufts

So these are probably reaches right? then please help me choose matches and safeties!!
I will love you forever!!!

Unfortunately, they do all appear to be reaches.

I would try and take the ACT again.

My son raised his score from a 31 to a 34 with zero studying.

So mere famiarity with the exam may help you.

I have two ideas for you. University of Rochester and Case Western.

Since they are not in the most desirable places, they are probably easier to get into, yet they are fine schools, especially for pre-med.

I will definitely look into them.

oh and i am taking the ACT again oct 22
my 30 was with no preparation

thanks!

oh and I just added Tufts

Now I would say this

Georgetown- low reach, high match(you need one more subject test)
Boston College- low reach, high match
John Hopkins- reach
Duke-reach
Vandy(Vanderbuilt?)- reach
Wake Forest- match(scores aren’t required)
Darthmouth-Reach
Harvard- High reach(for anyone)

I don’t have time to tell you matches and safeties. That is something you should do on your own.

thank you so much!
thoughts on Tufts?

bumper cars

Maybe apply ED if you really like the school to improve your chances. Tufts is tough to predict because they try to pick students they think will enroll (Not those who will use it as a safety and all)

i’ll look in to it for sure! my English teacher who I hope to get a really good rec from went to Tufts and that got me interested in the school.

shameless bump

How about like Williams? Amherst?

would you consider women’s colleges? if so, Bryn Mawr and Smith may be up your alley. In addition, look at Connecticut College (New London, CT), Pitzer College + (Claremont, CA), and American University (DC) as matches, and Manhattanville College (Purchase, NY) and Goucher College (Towson, MD) as safeties.

Thank you!!!

Budget?

Go to each school’s web site and search for “cost of attendance” and “financial aid estimator”. Determine which are affordable and classify as reach, match, or safety based on the more difficult of admissions difficulty and cost affordability as described below:

Cost safety = you can definitely afford the school based on guaranteed need and/or merit money, or you can easily afford list price without aid

Cost match = you can probably afford the school, but it is dependent on likely (but not certain) need and/or merit money

Cost reach = you can afford the school only if you get unlikely need and/or merit money (e.g. a large merit scholarship that is much more competitive than admission to the school)

Cost out of reach = there is no way you can afford the school. Don’t bother applying.

Medical school is expensive, so you do not want to have a lot of undergraduate debt.

While this doesn’t directly anwser your question, I still believe it is important. Based on what you wrote in your stats, I don’t think pre med would be a good major for you. You didn’t take Sat ii math level 2, physics, chem or bio M/E. Pick a major in humanities, social sciences or art. Example: literature, foreign language, journalism, sociology, art history, maybe even pre law…

Georgetown might work for you as 791 students in this year’s entering class of 1,624 were 1st, 2nd or 3rd in their class. G’Town likes the top students in their graduating classes. Take a third subject test and up your ACT and you will have a shot. Also, they have a program that allows you to apply to med school after your sophomore year called the Early Assurance Program. The link is [Early Assurance Program (EAP) - Pre-Medical Studies at Georgetown - Georgetown College](http://premed.georgetown.edu/undergrad/earlyassurance/).

Oh I actually took SAT II in BioE and got a 630 but I took the test more for fun because I hadn’t taken bio since sophmore year. I didn’t think that score would be putting my best foot forward so I didn’t think I would submit it.
I’m going to be retaking the Subject tests, probably redoing Lit just to see if I can do a wee bit better, and taking the Math subject test as well, probably level 2 but I’m not certain.

Oh and also everyone in my class has been saying i’m going to be the valedictorian since like 7th grade (students not teachers) but my schools administration doesn’t even think about choosing someone until like April before graduation. Would it be worth it for me to talk to my principal about making that decision now so that whoever (hopefully me, crossing my fingers!) is the valedictorian can put it on their apps?

you’ve definately got a shot. taking full advantage of your oppurtunities are the #1 thing colleges look at, and you’ve definately seemed to have done so

I’m really excited about that Early Assurance Program!
