Help me pick the right College...

I'm going to be a psychology major, but I do not feel limited to stay in a college with psych majors only. I'm creative and would appreciate being around artsy people, but above all I'm looking for DIVERSITY. Not just a certain type of person. I want to be around sociable people who know how to have fun and party, and at the same time are intelligent and serious about their work...

What do you think would be a good match for me, what are the advantages/disadvantages of each college?

I've narrowed it down to these so far but I can't make up my mind! :

College 9/10~ These are the newest colleges, and it seems like they have the best facilities and dining halls, but the themes (International and Global Issues / Social Justice and Community ) seem somewhat boring....

Merill~ I like the theme of this college, and I would take advantage of the honors opportunities available here.

Porter~This is the most beautiful college in my opinion... I like that it's close to the fitness center, which I will be going to a lot. And it has a beautiful view... The theme is great too.

Stevenson~ When I visited this college, it had a really a really great atmosphere, the people seem really artistic and friendly.

Thanks for any help =)

I went on a college tour a few days ago and these were the impressions I got:

Porter- VERY weird people. I went to eat at their cafe, and I was surrounded by punk rock people with purple hair and multiple piercings. Then a guy walked in with a button up shirt...and wore nothing but a bright green speedo underneath. The central area smelled kinda funky. And several girls were sunbathing topless. I actually made Porter my first choice because I really love art, but after seeing the people there, I was afraid I won't have anything in common with them, so I changed to Cowell.

Cowell- Gorgeous view of the bay. If you want to be near the fitness center, Cowell is right next to it. Maybe in your description you got Porter and Cowell mixed up cuz Porter isn't near the fitness center at all. I heard it has great parties and all the "surf" people go there.

And those are all the colleges I checked out. What was Stevenson like? From your description, it sounds like I might like it too.

Im goin to choose crown as my first college and 9 then 10. I am goin to majoring in bioengineering.

Sweet Ambrosia~

Thanks for informing me about Porter. LOL not the kind of people I want to be around... And I also read that that is the college that takes part in some kind of crazy rain ceremony in october, ugh
It's too bad though because that side of campus is really nice.

Cowell seems to be appealing to a lot of people... Maybe I will look more closely at it. I just didn't really like the dining halls, it felt stuffy...

Stevenson~ I didn't visit much of it, but I visited the cafeteria, and it gave me a really good impression. Everyone was really motivated and studying, they had some nice artwork on the wall, etc... As for the facilities, they seem clean and look pretty attractive. People seemed ok, normal.

Has anyone been to kresge. How's the dining hall there?

I didn't visit Kresge, I didn't hear that great of things about it, and supposedly, it's one of the hippy colleges. But then again, people said Stevenson is too, and when I visited I liked it a lot...

I visited again today... 3rd time but I need to be certain of my choices. I've switched it up around again, I'm taking Porter off my list because it's kind of isolated and not close to the fitness or anything.

So it's down to these two:
Stevenson, or Crown. I really can't decide! They're really close either way, so I can use the dining halls/libraries of both..

Stevenson--
Pros:
-Next to Cowell (where most of my friends are going)
-Next to the fitness and pool
-View on the OCEAN
-Cool people (Seems like)
-Good coffee shop...
-Interesting theme (Self and Society) ... but a lot of reading might get tiring after a while? What do you think?
-Nice library
-Big classrooms

Question--
I did not get to visit the dorms here, how are they? Clean, big/small, stuffy?
How is the dining hall and food?

Crown--
Pros:
-People here seem very intellectual! And I want to be in this kind of challenging environment
-The architecture and dorms are very nice and clean, a lot of light
-Convenient location, close to Cowell and fitness, and close to college 9/10
-Great dorms! Not stuffy like Cowell's
-INTERESTING theme. (Ethical Issues in Emerging Technologies), but what do the courses involve? Lecturing? Writing? What exactly...

Question--
How's the dining hall food?

hey guys, sry this may be out of topic but do any of you noe whether you will graduate a year later or just a semester later if you get admitted for the spring semester as a freshmen....(this is for Cal)

I suggest you start a new thread since it's not related to the topic.

Since you start a semester late, you end a semester late... makes sense right? And it depends how many classes you are willing to take each quarter, some people graduate in 5 years and others less than 4... Depends how you spend your time.

i woulda started a new one but i dunno where the link is....

courgette,

Have you been inside the Stevenson dorms or walked from the Crown lower quad dorms to the Crown dining hall?

No actually, I mostly looked at the people, the coffee shops, and the buildings from the outside. I actually did visit one of the Crown dorms (single), and it was nice! It didn't have that old rusty smell. But how are the stevenson dorms? Are they like Cow's or better? And the dining halls for both?

Tenchi,

AFAIK, Kresge does not have a dining hall - it's all apartments with their own kitchens.

courgette,

If the Stevenson dorms still have add-on dark wood paneling in the hallways (from waist to head level to minimize holes in the halls), they will be dark and claustrophic, especially with only one lounge per dorm as opposed to three as designed. I talked to Stevenson's administrator about that in 1998 and she confirmed that the panelling caused student complaints and retention problems. Stevenson's dorms are IMO otherwise better than Cowell's - better laid out and quieter. Cowell has better bus and on-campus shuttle access to anywhere.

Stevenson's dining hall is closed due to the risk of injury from falling glass in the event of earthquakes. Stevenson has used Cowell's dining hall since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Even in 1967-71 people preferred Cowell's dining hall to Stevenson's. I suspect it is fairly crowded these days serving two colleges with more students stuffed into the dorms than when I was there (due to conversion of the lounges to 3-person rooms).

The only problem with Crown for freshmen is the twice a day climb up the hill from the lower quad dorms to the cafeteria. This is a special problem for female students with short legs.

Tom: so if i choose kresge, where do i go to eat? some other college's dining hall?

If you want a nice butt, go to Crown. The massive hill will definately give your legs a workout. Courgette, how come you would rather choose Stevenson over Cowell?

Hehe, thanks for the info, Tom and Sweet Ambrosia :)

I guess that is one benefit about the Crown hill. I do wear heels though, quite a bit, but I don't mind taking them off whenever I need to climb that thing. :)

Last thing I wanted to know, for anyone who's been afiliated with it or has taken the class, what does the Crown Core Course involve??? (Ethical issues in emerging technologies) Current events, or what exactly?

Is the Stevenson class interesting? I have 2 hours to make up my mind! this is going to be a toughie...

lol 2 more hours.
Is kresge college too far from other colleges? Like more than 10min to college 10/9 and natural science building?

Oh yeah, I like Stevenson better because the facilities at Cowell seem kind of old, and the architecture is terrible and a bit depressing to me...

I wish I didn't have to make this decision...... I love both so much... Crown is so homey and welcoming, I love the grassy area and the mediteranean style buildings.. and the barbecue and the fireplace... and stevenson is.... just convenient I guess....And flat, close to the fitness.

This sucks!

Tenchi-- Kresge is way on the other side of the school with porter.

how long does it take to walk from kresge to science building? estimate
