Hi,
First of all, thank you for reading this. I'll be short.
I'm an international transfer student majoring in both economics and math. Thus far, I have been admitted to UW-Madison, UNC-Chapel Hill, U Oregon, Boston University, U Minnesota and U Southern California. I am still waiting on the University of Washington-Seattle.

My questions: Which school has the best reputation overall? Which school has the best Econ program; and kind of tiding it all together, which school could help me get into an Ivy league Grad school (assuming I do my part of the job of course).

Thank you very much for any answer you can give me.

PS: I'm leaning toward UW-Madison but it's with little infos.

Hi Nico!
I applied for economics at Minnesota and I was accepted too ( I am an international).
First,congratulations for so many acceptances!
From what I heard I think the most prestigious is UWMadison and for eocnomics Minnesota(according to USNews), I think in the majority of these you will not have problems to be accepted in a Ivy graduate, instead form Oregon(actually Inever heard from this institution).

But I think you will have an accurater answer from an American student

U of Oregon student here. Our business and economics programs are extremely well-known, and we often place students in top-tier graduate schools. I think it’s truly an underrated university as a whole, though it’s starting to gain recognition as the University of California system falls apart.

There are no clear, easy answers for the kinds of questions you are asking. You are looking at 6 large research universities with similar strengths and weaknesses. Which one would have the lowest out-of-pocket cost for you? Which location(s) do you prefer?

Doing your part of the job will be far more significant than any relative advantage any one of these schools could give you.

However, if cost is not a significant factor, and without knowing much about your situation or preferences, I’d lean toward UNC-CH. It has an excellent reputation. UNC and USC have the best weather of these 6 schools, but UNC probably will be less expensive for you than USC (unless USC is offering a lot of aid).

Congratulations on your admission to those places!

Out of those, I would say that it’s between UW-Madison, UNC-Chapel Hill, and USC. Personally, I think that USC is overrated. Honestly, any of those schools would be a great choice - but if it were me, I would probably choose UNC-Chapel Hill. I’m from the South, though, so I’m biased - I would love to settle in Chapel Hill long-term. It’s a nice area with nice weather, a very educated population, and the Tar Heels are pretty serious when it comes to school spirit. UW-Madison is also a very good school. Minnesota is great and it’s a lot less expensive for out-of-state students than the others. Honestly, it doesn’t look like you can really go wrong.

Also, two other things:

1) Your undergrad doesn’t matter that much for getting into graduate school - it does matter, but not as much as people seem to think it does. You could get into a top grad school from any of those universities. And

2) The best graduate schools are not always Ivies. For example, in my field - four of the public schools on your list (UNC, UW-Madison, Minnesota, and Washington) are in the top 10 for graduate programs.

Hi Guys!
Ii am in the same situation of @nikopdx!
I know I have posted a reply for his situation, but I am getting desperate to my case!
I am an international and I applied for transfer 2012, I am studying in Brazil, almost finishing my BSC in Accounting and I was accepted as a transfer for Indiana University(pre-business),University of Texas(economics),University of Minnesota(economics).
I know that from the three options,UTexas is considered more prestigious and highly-ranked overall, however Minnesota has a high prestige in economics. I do plan to come back to Brazil after I finished my studies ,UTexas by far is 32k for tuition(on the other hand UMN is 16k for tuition).
My family said to enroll at UMN for the lower tuition(I think I can afford UTexas too), but I kind of in love with UTexas campus, prestige…
Summarizing, do you think that UTexas higher prestige is more important that the low tuition of UMN?

Texas does not have much prestige in many parts of the United States among the average person. This is particularly true among the average Joe and Jane in the northeast.

I think you need to either take prestige out of the equation, or refine your definition of prestge. For example, if you goal is to secure a job at a top accounting firm in Sao Paulo, maybe it makes some sense to go to the school with the most prestige in Sao Paulo. If you want to apply to graduate school at the University of Virginia you might consider which colleges and universities serve as “feeders.” (That’s not really the same thing as prestige but it might be a more important factor.

Throw away the USNews&WR and look at what each school offers YOU and try to determine which one is most likely to provide the academic program, career counseling and personal well-being necessary to help you achieve YOUR dreams.

Thank you @hudson for the response!
Actually I already study in the university considered the best in my own country, with the best accounting program, I am very satisfied with the education I received. However,I really want to explore other options, maybe studying abroad and facing other realities,my family and I have been saving some money a long time ago to study abroad.
I want to work in the financial market or in a consulting company in Brazil, and here in Brazil it is kind of impossible to have the flexibility of study options that you have in USA (I would need to study 4 years again to receive an economics degree and good Masters are mainly offered to students with an econ graduate).

-These two options can give me a solid education in Econ ( UTexas and U Minnesota)?

Thanks everyone, there are complete and helpful answer! I need a little more time to think about it though but what do you think about U of Washington? (not that I am accepted yet but how knows).

I think UWashington it is a good deal! Seattle is a cool city too!
Congratulations and good luck with your decision, mine have been really tough!
