Hi, Im really confused on whether I should continue on my career path towards being an engineer. I’ve been told that not only do you need math and science but you also must need comprehension and writing skills and those areas are lacking for me since I am dyslexic so sometime I misplace or misspell words. I have gotten better over the years but it is still very difficult for me I am really good at math and science but word problem throw me off.
If you have been formally diagnosed with dyslexia, you should be fine. Universities have offices that exist to make sure you get the help you need - my wife used to work at one and helped make sure that dyslexic students had test conditions that gave them extra time and or access to someone who could help them read and understand the questions. Companies will generally that you will need help in some areas but that isn’t usually a big problem either, engineering is a team sport anyway. I’ve worked with dyslexic engineers.
If you don’t have the formal diagnosis, you’re in trouble. So get it.
