Help me understand college classes

At my school, for chemistry they recommend:
152 Gen Chem 1
154 Gen Chem 2
232 Organic Chem 1
234 Organic Chem 2

Does this mean a full year of chem 1 and a full year of chem 2 and so forth?

that is correct correct. each class is one semester, most likely 3 credit hrs

^^What he means is that the Gen Chem 1 and Gen Chem 2 TOGETHER are one full year. Same for OChem.

Each class you listed is 1 semester long but you need to 2 semesters to complete the course.

Besides lecture–which will be either 3 or 4 credits depending on your school’s policies-- you will also need to take lab with all 4 semesters of chem classes. Lab is a required co-enrollment to get credit for the lecture portion of the class. (IOW, to get full credit for completing Gen Chem 1, you also need to to take and pass Gen Chem 1 Lab. If you don’t pass/take lab, you haven’t completed the class.) At most schools, you will get a notation on your transcript for lab that is separate from the lecture and a separate grade for lab.

Lab is usually 3-4 hours/week, plus some schools require an additional 1 hour/week lab lecture as part of lab.

In additional to lecture and lab, you will also have a required recitation/workshop/study group (different schools call it by different names) for each science and math class you take. That’s another 1-2 hours/week. Attendance is not mandatory and you won’t receive a separate grade, but your TA will give quizzes and homework that count as part of your lecture grade.
