Help me with transferring, can't decide a major

I am now 27 years old and have been going on and off to a SUNY community college since the Fall of 2005. I've acquired 77 GPA hours and have a 3.21 GPA. The courses I have taken over the years vary, although over the last three semesters I have been taking Computer Science classes.

Lately I've been having more of an interest in finance/economics and I'm thinking about doing that, but I'm at a point where I really need to stick to something. More importantly is that I don't want to be at a community college anymore. I want to be away from home for the first time, at a University, where I can really have academic growth and a change of scenery, where I can just go to the library at 3am to study. I really do want to learn, but I'm having trouble excelling still living at home and going to community college.

I have all of these credits, and i have Computer Science 1 and 2 completed. I also have all the basic liberal arts courses completed as well, like ENG 101 and 102, etc. I have also completed Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and I'm currently taking Calculus 1 (although I am retaking it from last semester for a better grade).

The bottom line is I want to be at University, living there and learning.

Can anyone offer me some suggestions. I would probably continue to study Computer Science, but I do have a real strong interest in finance as well. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I don't want to finish up the degree at this community college because I feel like I'm not going anywhere. I want to just take what credits transfer and then finish out a degree at a four year University. I'd like to be in a combined finance + CS program.

Thanks.

27 years old? CC for 9 years? Combo finance + CS program?

Listen I’ll be frank. You shouldn’t be in CC this long. You need to figure out where you want to do (liberal arts major, trade school, idk something) and go. The fact that you say you want a combo finance + cs program tells me you haven’t figured this out yet. Those degrees go in completely different paths and are most likely mutually exclusive.

On a side-note have you looked at colleges, cost, and admission standards? Those usually determine where people go.

The only degree you can get at a Community College would be an Associates degree and you should already have enough credits for that. You need to figure out what you are interested in and go for that. Having a passing knowledge of computer science is not a bad thing for a finance major so you have not wasted any courses at this point. Think about what you would like to be doing in 5 years and that should be a good guide as to a major.

bornerr,

I have not been there consecutively for 9 years. I have dropped in and out many times, withdrawing from many classes. I only started taking Math and Science classes in Fall of 2012 and have been on that path since. I just don’t want to stay at this school any longer. I want to transfer out somewhere and I"m looking for recommendations.

I have a 3.21 GPA with 77 GPA hours.

I’m just saying that even though for the past two years I’ve been focusing on math and computer science, lately I’ve been finding a huge interest in Finance and Economics, even though I do still enjoy CS.

I was wondering if you could recommend some schools that I could transfer to with my GPA. I want to go to a good school that won’t cost too much and put me too much into debt. I don’t want to go to some random private University and be put into massive amounts of debt.

Since you go to SUNY CC, why not look into SUNY colleges for CS. Your CC credits will transfer, and now that you have several CC CS classes, and you like CS, seems like that would be logical to pursue a CS degree. My son graduated with a CS degree in May 2012, had two job offers, and is working in his field and likes it. The jobs in CS are numerous, do a search on the internet for CS jobs. It is a solid career choice IMO.

You would need to apply ASAP for Fall 2014, some of the SUNY application dates for Fall 2014 have passed, like Stony Brook transfer application deadline is March 1.
