So, I am applying for Texas A&M... and wanna know if I have shot or if I really REALLY need to write a killer essay and raise my grades somehow. I THOUGHT I was okay, but my father basically said I failed at life when it came to my grades. Thanks Dad. Love you too. T.T

My GPA: 3.56 (I hate French... XP )
My ACT score: 31 (retaking it; hopefully raise it)
My SAT score: 2250
Critical Reading:780
Math: 790
Writing:680

I'm moving to Texas for my Senior year. (Parents can't stand snow. T.T They couldn't wait ONE year for me to graduate...)

At my old school I was in the National Honor Society, Tennis, and Concert Choir.
Oh, and my old school was New Mexico Military Institute, so I could only join one after school activity. Not sure if that'll help any.

Thanks!!

I would say you’re probably in.

The school change could make this more interesting than it needs to be, but since applications are due before the end of fall semester, I’m guessing they’d be basing everything on your record at NMMI. What was your class rank there? With your SAT scores, you should be eligible for an academic admit if you were in the top quarter of your class. Otherwise, it goes to review where the “killer essay” would come into play. :)

Good luck!

My class rank at NMMI was somewhere between 2-4. I’m not exactly sure… they don’t rank us.

sigh Killer essay, here I come. Blech. XP

Thanks, guys!

Between 2-4 out of how many? In the event a school doesn’t rank, they ask for a “school profile” that gives them a context with which to interpret the GPA. I doubt they’re looking for reasons to reject someone with a 1570/1600 SAT.

I dont know essay will make much difference since A&M admissions are mainly based on being top 10%, 25% + SAT or review process if you are in top 50%.

They might want you for your military institute credentials.

For the class of 2010 (most recent class for which data is available) top 10% admits accounted for 49.38% of the class; academic admits accounted for 13.85%; and review admits accounted for 36.60%.

For review admits, “If an applicant does not qualify for top 10% or academic admission, but meets the State of Texas Uniform Admission Policy, the complete application file will be reviewed. The information reported in the application, essays A and B, and any supplemental information including a resume, essay C, or letters of recommendation are considered along with the applicant’s academic profile.” [tamu.edu] I would think essays constitute a considerable part of the review admit process.

Steve- it’s like 2-4 out of a measly 100 or so. (Not a lot of people wanna attend a military institute )

So is it the top 10% of my old school (NMMI)? Or is going to be the top 10% of a my new Senior year high school?
