Help! My 16 y/o Aspie has given up!

Are there consequences at home? I take away privileges like phone, TV and car when they don’t do their jobs. Their jobs defined as doing the best they can in school.

My son is autism spectrum, and we take away privileges and he doesn’t care.

I read about this recently:
http://www.autism.org.uk/about/what-is/pda.aspx

I’m really thinking he is in that realm, from the website:

The distinctive features of a PDA profile include:

resists and avoids the ordinary demands of life
uses social strategies as part of avoidance, eg distracting, giving excuses
appears sociable, but lacks understanding
experiences excessive mood swings and impulsivity
appears comfortable in role play and pretence
displays obsessive behaviour that is often focused on other people.

We also had little success with consequences. Now that he drives, the idea of losing that privilege works tho.

Update: He actually is telling people he’d like to go to Emerson. An improvement over the blanks stare!!

His GPA took a small hit this year. He’ll probably be around 86/87% now with his 1330. Still ok I think.

Working this summer and enjoys it. Not looking forward to the essay process with him tho!!

So…S’s GPA is now 88.38%. He made a 1330 SAT. Not retesting. No Subject tests will be taken. (The individual grades trend more 85ish, even though the avg is 88.)

For now, he is looking for schools with a good film production program. Still not really super interested in the process, but likes the idea of Emerson in Boston. I’d like to get some value for our $ too.

Here is the list for now:

Purchase College
Ithaca
Juniata
SUNY New Paltz
SUNY Oneonta
Emerson
Chapman
Syracuse
UNC School of the Arts

Some are “out there” bc he may not go far away. We’ll see how the senior year progresses before we decide anything. No ED here. Too up in the air.

Is it better to wait for RD instead of EA to improve grades? Or will they defer if that is an issue?

I think you can safely EA at Ithaca, Juniata, and the SUNYs, but wait for Fall grades for Chapman and Syracuse.
UNC Asheville is pretty artsy.
What about Rowan?

Thank you, I will put it on the list! They all call their film programs different names. Hard to seach and easy to miss them!

BTW, the 88 avereage on the 90-100 = A scale is a 3.4. This is why I say more like an 85.

He ended up doing (for film):
Ithaca
Purchase
Emerson
Ohio U
Seton Hall
Ursinus
New Paltz
Juniata

He is in at Ithaca, Ohio and Seton Hall so far.

@HRSMom not sure how high Ursinus is on your list, but my D is there and I have been impressed with the accommodations office. PM me if you want more info.

Congratulations!

@HRSMom that’s awesome! Let me know if I can answer any Ithaca questions for you – I grew up there.

@HRSMom So excited and happy for you! and your son…

Purchase’s Film program is very good. They are finishing a new big building that will house a lot of facilities and technology for the Film and New Media departments. Strong alum network.

This is very interesting: almost as though the child is smart enough to manipulate but not psychologically capable of doing???

@center
Exactly.

Ok update:

So far in at
Ithaca +14k
Purchase
Ohio U +10k
Seton Hall + 25k
New Paltz
Juniata + 25k
Fairleigh Dickenson + 25k
Scholarships require 3.0 except Ithaca: 2.75

Waiting for
Emerson
Ursinus

Ohio U is probably just too far away. Purchase too close.

I’d like him to see Ithaca, New Paltz and Juniata. Any votes for seeing Seton Hall?

Ursinus just came in. Accepted with $30k a year requiring only 2.0 gpa to be maintained…looks like we’ll go see it too!

Congratulations !
It’s probably between Juniata, Ithaca, Ursinus, and Ohio U then?

@MYOS1634 Ohio is probably out. Even though my family is near, it is 600 miles from home. His brother goes to Michigan, but he’s a different kid (and even he suffers a bit by being so far away).

His GC suggested Ursinus, so it definitely is something to check. It is probably between Ithaca, New Paltz and Ursinus for now. Once we see them, (including Juniata), we’ll see. He will likely hear from Emerson this week to. That is his one real “reach-y” school.

I made him a list of the schools, by net price, including the GPA, if any he needs to maintain. He wanted to see that visual. I’m not sure what to try to get him to look for/compare/contrast when we go though. The older S was pretty independent about it. This one seems to need more direction.

Any advice on visuals to compare when we go visit?
