Hi I'm a rising senior in Texas , AA female, 1790 sat, 3.39 UW GPA...10.2 ish W GPA out of 12, NHS member & international thespian

I've been doing theater since 7th grade and I love however over the years I have picked up several other interests such as teaching and history & community service so while I'm sure I want to major in theater I need a school that will allow me to be involved in other areas as well I'm interested in hands on approach like I don't want a program that gives tons of theater paperwork homework, and I'm more interested in acting than MT...any help would be most welcome

I'm currently looking at at SMUs BFA in theater studies program and UT Austin's BFA in Theater Studies programs...I like these programs yet I'm not completely sure if they are right for me...SMU only accepts 15-18 people into their theater studies program so it might not give me the flexibility I would like, and as for UT my class rank is only in top 25%

I wouldn’t mind schools in Texas or out of state but the theater department must be relatively good and the school needs to have good academics as well

For in state, look at University of North Texas, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin - all have relatively strong theatre departments. Also, Texas State, but it is increasingly hard to get into.

reader - You are going to have to be a bit patient here. It’s a great group but you have to give folks time to respond. You can go through and read the other posts to see what other people are thinking as well.

I think you need to look at the various programs and fine tune what you really want - BA vs. BFA; performance or theatre studies; large or small school. One thing to keep in mind. My D is an a performance oriented BFA program and she still has lots of “paper” homework. Dramatic Analysis is a very homework intensive class for her. It’s still college and you are going to have papers and research projects and the like. Break a leg!

Sorry I suppose I’m just really anxious…I appreciate all of the help, as for schools that offer a B.A and. a BFA do the BFA students usually get more attention or does it matter because I think I’m leaning toward either a BA or a bfa in theater studies which seems to be more flexible at some schools

If you want more flexibility or the opportunity to double major, a BA may be a better fit for you. At some schools that offer both a BFA and a BA, the BFA students do get more performance opportunities than the BAs. That’'s one factor to consider as you narrow down your list. You will see discussions on here about creating a spreadsheet. You may want to do that. List the school, type of degree(s) offered, audition vs. non-audition, cost of attendance, credit offered for AP tests, deadlines for applications/auditions, things like that. Then you can begin to weigh the pros and cons of each school. Just remember that you really are really looking for is that elusive “fit” that we all seem to talk about. So if you can go visit schools, see a show, sit in on classes, talk to current students that will help you so much. But you need a good list of schools that seem to meet your needs/desires to get to the point that you can go visit. So at this point I would go look CLOSELY at those websites. Look at the classes that are required and think about how you would be spending your class time. Then start that list.

Everyone here understands the anxiety. Honest!
