Help needed calculating my CSU and UC GPA!

Hello,

Since I’m from NY, our GPA system is a bit different from those that CSU and UC schools use. I was hoping someone could help me calculate my GPA for both CSU and UC schools since i’m looking to apply at schools like SDSU, UCSB, Cal Poly, and UCLA.

I’m a little confused with the a-g course thing since I took many of the a-g courses when I was in 8th and 9th grade and supposedly grades 8 and 9 are not calculated in your CSU and UC GPA. Here’s a list of all the classes I have taken from grades 8-11 and the grades which have been calculated in my school’s GPA.

8th grade:

Honors Earth Science (lab): B

Honors Math 1 (algebra 1): B

Spanish: A

9th grade:

English: B

Global History: B

Honors Math 1 and 2 (algebra 1 and 2): B

Honors Biology (lab): B

Spanish: A

Keyboarding: A

Studio in Art: A

10th grade:

English: A

Global History: B

Honors Math 2: B

Chemistry (lab): B

Spanish: A

Video Production: A

11th grade:

Business law: A

English: A

Spanish: A

Sports marketing: A

Honors Pre-Calc: B

US History: A

Also will any of my grades for 12th grade matter for my transcript?

Thank you in advance!

Courses taken in the 8th and 9th grade will be used to determine if you have fulfilled A-G requirements, however, the UC/CSU GPA will ONLY include courses taken in 10th and 11th grade in the A-G requirements. Up to 8 semesters of AP/honors courses taken in 10th and 11th will also be weighted.

So, take the courses in A-G subjects (see UC PATHWAYS for a complete description) that you took in 10th and 11th grade.

Video Production, business law and Sports Marketing will almost certainly not count towards UC A-G requirements, so do not include them in your GPA calculations. I notice that you have studio art listed in 9th grade --- make sure you have a FULL year of studio art in order to meet the visual/performing arts requirement.

Assign courses in A-G subjects in 10th and 11th grades numerical value as follows:

For every A = 4 points
For every B = 3 points
For every C = 2 points
For every D = 1 point

Add an extra point (except for D's) for your best grades in AP/honors courses taken in 10th and 11th. Honors courses will likely need to be certified as such by your high school as an out of state student.

Then, divide by the total number of classes. By my calculations, you have a total of 9 A-G subject courses in 10th and 11th, but since you did not supply semester grades, only your yearly average, I can't figure it out for you (the UC's ask for your grades each semester, not just your yearly average).

Out of state students must have a 3.4 or higher UC GPA, plus a combination of minimum test scores.

Once you have determined your UC GPA, go to the ucop.edu/pathways site and look for the information on the TEST SCORES you need as an out of state student (SAT plus TWO Subject tests) to see if you qualify. The admissions criteria are tougher for out of state residents than they are for instate, and California residents get priority.

So I should have a 3.78 GPA if those honors classes are certified? Is there any way I can find out if they're certified. I know that the UC pathways site has a function like that, but it's only for California schools.

Also that art class was an every day full year class, so I'm good.

Thank you very much for your help Carolyn! Sadly my weighted GPA isn't as high as my school's.

Will any part of my senior year be used for my GPA? This site here states that they use 10-12. CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - GPA Calculator

I would need to see your SEMESTER grades in order to see what your UC/CSU GPA is.

Grades from 12th are considered as part of the final admissions process once you have been preliminary admitted. You will then send in your transcript, and they will verify that you have reported accurate grades, and completed the classes you said you were going to. But, the deadline for applying to the UC's is November 30 of senior year, so only your 11th and 10th grades will be considered when they make the admissions decision.

At my school we work on a quarterly system and then a final exam. They count the final exam as another quarter so it's really like 5 quarters. They take all your grades from the 5 quarters and divide it by 5 to come up with your final grade. They then use your final grade for your GPA. We don't have semester grades. So i'm really not sure on how to provide you with information with my semester grades.

I can see why you are having trouble figuring it - that is confusing! Can you get your HS counselor to email UC admissions and ask? Has anyone from your HS (successfully) apllied to a UC? Maybe you could use them as a resource.

Maybe try the UCSB discussion forum and put a title something like "Advice from NY OOS UC student needed!" (Or try UCB or UCLA - those forums are much more active this time of year.)
