HELP!! NEOMED (NEOUCOM) or Biomedical Sciences@OSU

I am a senior in highschool and got into these 2 majors....I'm divided between the two and have to make a decision soon Thank you!

NEOMED:
270K
6 years for MD
occupied summers
3.5 GPA and 24 MCAT (W/O writing) gets you guaranteed seat in med school
focus on primary care
about 100 people get in

OSU Biomedical Sciences Major
230K
8 years for MD
free summers (I probably will fill them with something academic though)
NOT guaranteed MedSchool Admittance
close to OSU medical center/research
about 20 people get in

Again, thank you. Everyday I talk about this with my parents and think about it because there isn't an obvious decision (for me) please help me make a decision.

Wow! Two good choices! I like the idea of a guaranteed program. Do you know anyone in the NEOMED program? How hard is it to keep a 3.5? How do you feel about primary care? If you’re o.k. with the 3.5 and primary care, I’d say the extra $40K is worth it.

You may want to ask this question on the med school forum on this web site.

I also like the idea of a guaranteed program, but i feel that the education i recieve might be inferior to that at OSU, especially because it is completed in a rush imo.

Do you know anyone in the NEOMED program? Yes, amd they said that they enjoy it and recomend it to those who plan to become an MD in a short time and no worries to not getting into med school, which i feel that all med-bound students would enjoy. In fact, most physicians I have talked to tell me to go to NEOMED because it is quicker and guaranteed (basically) as long as I have little/no interest in research.

How hard is it to keep a 3.5? I feel that it a little easier to get a 3.5 at the NEOMED program than at OSU Biomedical Sciences, by comparing the MCAT/curriculums/further pursuits from the majors.

How do you feel about primary care? I would be fine with primary care, but as a high school senior, i find it rather difficult to make a strong decision on it. I have always been interested with the human psyche, so phychiatry was also an option. All in all, I feel that I’ll make a more informed decision while actually in undergrad/med school where I’ve had much more experience in the field and have made more connections

If I attend the OSU biomedical Sciences major, I’ll have the ability to do an MD/PhD, of course with the right grades/etc. In fact, OSU may give me more opportunities in the long run.

*I have to keep a 3.5 GPA in either to stay in the program. Gosh there are pros and cons for both.

Five years ago, there were a handful of us discussing guaranteed physician assistant programs. My son went for it, even though it wasn’t a big name school. The other posters decided to go the traditional route, at better-named schools. My son is getting ready to start his 5th year (rotations) and is very excited. All of a sudden, I see these same posters back on this web site asking how to get into P.A. schools. Most are having to get another year’s worth of medical experience/research to qualify for programs. I know a student with a 3.6 GPA who was waitlisted or rejected everywhere. Yes, OSU may give you more opportunities, but are you a gambler?
