Okay. I am a freshman right now taking only one honors class, US-History, it is very easy so I believe I need to step it up next year. I talked to my guidance counselor and I could take two summer courses, English 10 and Biology. I now want to ask for some AP classes for sophomore year. What would you recommend for me to take? I was thinking AP Human Geography or AP psych. with AP bio. Would this be to rough on a sophomore? Again I would love some feedback. Thank you in advance.

First of all, what APs are available for sophomores in your school, and how many are you allowed to take?

Next, what courses can you take (what have you taken the prerequisites for)?

If you do well in your summer bio class, and think you’re ready, go ahead for bio. However, if you find it very challenging, maybe you should take an honors bio course with an AP junior year.

If you are up for the workload, and are willing to give time to studying, I believe 2 APs (which I believe is what you’re implying) is definetely doable for a sophomore.

I’d recommend ap human, just because I’ve found that a lot of history makes more sense when you have the human geography background. Both psych and geo were “fun” ap classes for me. They’re still ap classes, which is probably different and much more work-intensive than your other classes. There’s a lot of memorization involved with human geography, but if you’re willing to put in the work, you’ll be fine. Both psych and geo are good sophomore classes, imo. AP Bio is pretty tough. I’ve never taken it, but my friends tel me it’s a lot of reading and memorization.

I second what @jamesjunkers says. And there’s no way to say if something will be rough or not on a sophomore. It’s not like all sophomores are alike! :stuckouttongueclosedeyes:

Anyhow, take the classes you’re interested in. Do the things that interest you, and if you find yourself in a class that’s too easy/too hard, you can always get out of it. Don’t let the counselors say otherwise

Wow… the smiley did not work :(

Obviously it varies by school, but Human Geography and Psych are very easy at my school. Biology is considered to be one of the hardest next to Physics C, BC Calc, and APUSH.

Depends on teacher difficulty…I have heard that AP Human Geo and AP psych are pretty easy everywhere. AP Bio at my school was not too hard, but it is a lot of memorization. If you take regular Bio over the summer, I think you would be fine.

Thanks! I will be talking to my guidance counselor when I get back from vacation. Maybe i will hold off on bio till Junior year. Also, just curious what are the prerequisites for AP eng. lit.? Do you have to take AP eng. lang. first or not. This will probably vary from school to school, but what was it like for your school?

It depends. At my school, you can take either ap lang or lit senior year, but if you take lang junior year, you have to take lit senior year.

Some people told me that you need ap lang. before you ap lit. Is that true? I will be taking English 11 honors next year so it should fulfill the requirement. I am probably just going to have to talk to the guidance counselor about it. How about ap calc along with bio and stats for junior year? Would that be to much of a stretch? I am mean i don’t want burn out of school taking to many ap classes. My math and science teachers say that I could do good, but I don’t think I should overload myself, right?

No, although schools are free to establish their own prereqs. If students do both, they generally do AP Lang junior year and AP Lit senior year, but not because AO Lang is “needed.”

Regarding AP lang before AP Lit, you would have to talk to your school about that. My school was opposite to what skieurope said, we are required to take AP Lit before AP Language (Junior year vs Senior Year). It’s different for every school, though - our crosstown rivals are the exact opposite.

Also about Lang and Lit: it depends on your school. My school doesn’t offer Lang at all, but Lit is a senior year course option (a very difficult one, however–only 1-2 As per class).
