Help! One section of SAT went up a little and the other section dropped a lot

D did respectably the first time around. She took the test again in Aug and the score is out. She went up 10 points in Engl and down 100 points in math !!! As far as superscoring goes I’m thinking to forget about this test and just send in the first one she took. Isn’t it better that they don’t see this bad math score even if it means giving up those 10 extra Eng points?

D hadn’t looked at a math problem or been in school for a couple of months and apparently forgot all her math. She did however work on a few Eng things before the test.

I think I know the answer to my own question, but I appreciate the responses

Oh, I think she may be applying to a couple school where you self report your scores and only send them in if accepted. In that case I might tell her to give her highest scores. Thoughts?

10 points is not worth the time to type in the second set of scores on the Common App and is statistically meaningless, IMO. As long as she’s not applying to Georgetown, I’d let it go.

I think it depends on the school and the score in relationship to that schools SAT ranges, so take a look at that. Also check the self reporting requirements carefully. I don’t think you can cherry pick section scores. Think you have to report both sections of any test date you submit, you just don’t have to report all test dates, for schools using self reporting

I agree - the 10 points will not help. I would not report the second score unless she is applying to a school that requires all scores.
