HELP! OSU vs. UT-Austin

I’ve got offer of admission from osu industrial system engineering and UT-Austin sociology. I want to study in engineering filed. But ut has better rank and better engineering.

Which university should I choose? Why?

Thank you sooooo much!!!

You didn’t get into UT engineering and that’s what you want to study. Choose OSU.

Yea this is an easy choice assuming both are affordable. Go to OSU so you can actually study the field you want.

Go to the school where you can major in your area of interest…sounds like OSU to me.

tOSU, hands down.
You didn’t get the major you wanted at UT, so it’s immaterial another major is better ranked since you’re not in it.
tOSU is a respected flagship university and you will certainly find engineering there quite challenging.

I think OSU for him is likely Oklahoma State University, but yes go there.

How much does OSU cost?

If it’s too much, can you change majors at UT? Why are those the only 2 choices? Are you a transfer student?

osu is Ohio State University:p

Yes I am a transfer student and I’m an international students. Some of my friends told me that UT is way better than osu so I can’t dicide which school to go.

I can change major but I don’t know the certain rules.

UT is more expensive for international students.

Since acceptance rate up to 85% for transfer students in Ohio State University, some people say that osu is a school take in everyone. I’m an international student so actually I don’t know how you define a good school? In our country good schools are usually very hard to get in. However, we are totally different education systems.

Thank you so much~ I can’t find much useful information on the internet and your words are usually helpful~

Will you think UT is better than OSU for undergraduate ?

It’s incredibly difficult to get into the Cockrell school as a transfer admitted to another major. Don’t risk it.

In the US, the rigor of a school is often independent of its overall admissions rate. Ohio State services a state with a far lower population than UT Austin which is one reason why more students are let in. However, it is a very strong research university, one with outstanding opportunities for undergraduate involvement.

Again, the choice is easy. Go to OSU.

But compared to OSU, is UT much better? My teacher told me I can find way to change major or discover my interest.

I’m not sure why you are even considering UT sociology when you want to study engineering. You are getting good advice here and while you are free to ignore it do so at your own risk unless you would be perfectly happy to graduate with a sociology degree.

Instead of chasing other people’s opinion of prestige, it seems like a much better use of your time and energy to chase the career you want to pursue. That should point your towards OSU. And BTW in the USNWR ranking of colleges OSU and UT-Austin are tied at #52.

@Clara0730 does your teacher specifically understand how difficult it is to change majors at UT?

As we are learning also, UT is not like a lot of other schools which somewhat freely allow you to transfer to a different major. It is very difficult to transfer into engineering at UT. What would you do if you did not get the transfer?

Your teacher probably has no idea of the difficulty for a transfer student to change majors into eng’g at UTexas.

you have nothing to fear by going to Ohio State for eng’g. Very good school.

Got it! Thank you so much!!

You are right. I need to prepare for the worst situation and I definitely don’t want to graduate with a Sociology degree, Thank you so much.

We have an industrial engineer in the family. His degree is from a small, regional school up north that no one here has ever ever heard of. He works right alongside engineers from UT, Purdue and other bigger schools.

They do the same job. They make the same money. They have the same benefits. No one cares, no one asks where he went to school.

They care and ask if he can do the job, if he can do the math and if he can get the projects done.

It will be the same for you. Go get that IE degree from OSU and don’t even look back! Good luck, work hard and enjoy and congrats!
