The title says it all, I am a junior with a 3.96 GPA and extensive EC's, but I can't get any scholarships that are need based or any gift aid... (even though I am in financial need). Does anyone know of a solution to my situation?

Thanks if you can offer me any advice.

They don't have to actually pay the taxes to file the return.

Also, you can get merit scholarships.

Your parents need to file even if they can't pay. Direct them to the IRS website fo rhelp with this. Also, they are giving up the tax rebate this year that would offset some of what they owe.

I don't know anything about your parents' situation, so it's hard to give you advice ... but they MUST file tax returns, even if they can't pay. If they put it off, they will owe the taxes plus a huge penalty. Please, please direct them to the IRS website.

If the problem has to do with illegal alien status or the like, that's another story.

Been there, done that -- tell your parents to file their taxes, but don't pay. They will get a letter from the IRS asking for a payment. At that time they can make payment arrangements. But you will be able to fill FAFSA

My Dad says he is trying to get an extension, can he file so I can do the FAFSA then get the extension on paying it? The problem is he made a lot of money last year working abroad but its all gone now and they dont have anything left to afford taxes.

The extension is to file, but not to pay. So he might as well file the return now and pay later as others have said.

Let me try to clarify: You can ask the IRS for an extension to file your return. For example, you might be waiting for more information, or just don't have time. But the money you owe is still due April 15. The extension only give you more time to file the return. At which time, if you overpaid, you get a refund, or if you owe more you pay it in with interest. So if your parents owe money, they might as well file the return so you can do the FAFSA and pay in when they can because the money was due April 15 either way.

Your father may want to contact a qualified tax preparer about his taxes. If he earned the money overseas, he may be able to exempt some of it.
