HELP!!! Parents won't let me become an art major!

My parents ABSOLUTELY detest the idea of me earning an art degree in college. I have talked to them many times and they won't agree to it nor will they pay. So I'm stuck to be applying to a UC. Not really excited to go to college and super depressed....

Anyways, in the future, when I apply for art job/commission the portfolio is what they care most about, right? I still might have a chance to get to my dreams...

Compromise and get a double major? Maybe see if they’d let you do that

Yes, art jobs are heavily based on portfolios and past work. You can major and anything and become an artist. If you really are set on being an art major, I would do some practical like graphic design (a very modern artistic approach with more job prospects) or major in something your parents approve of and take art classes/make art a second major or a minor.

I’m not opposed to art majors, but I can completely understand your parents concerns. They are probably worried about what will happen after college. JSYK, a lot of art major classes consist of history and background as well so if your focus is solely to improve on your artistic talents, I would minor or take a bunch of electives.

Thank u for ur reply! Yes I am thinking of graphic design!! And illustration (just in case I get commissioned I am aiming for that).

So I still have a chance!!! THANK U!!!
