Hi everyone, I am an upcoming Senior at my school (excited for class of 2011's graduation), the only problem is finding the right college for me and I am in need of help of suggestion. I most definitely intend on majoring in International Relations and I am fully aware of the rigor that has to deal with this major. I live in NYC and I was searching for colleges around the area, at the same time out-of-state schools. Unfortunately I am unable to find schools with great International Relations program. I would prefer if i can get suggestions around NYC (No offense to anyone, please no Catholic Schools), I would like to know suggestions Massachusets, NY, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and New Jersey. I also would like to show my SAT and other grades to see if I can find a college match-up.

I would say to take the ACT at least once, and see if you are really good at it. Many people actually do better at one test, then there counterparts (sat, or act)

@Redroses: is my SAT score that bad?..@nothingto: Once again is my SAT that bad? Thank you the suggestion @Achilles1 Thank you! I will definitely take a look at it @Sylvan8798: haha yeah, so do you have any tips?

Your SAT isn’t bad; it’s just that most CCs are used to seeing 2000+s. To them, anyone scoring below 2000 needs to go to community college.

1610 is above average. If you improve on it a little bit, you have a decent chance at a top 200 school. Stony Brook University (SUNY) has a pretty good international relations program, and I’d say you have a shot there. I’ve also heard good things about Hofstra (famous for its high-profile political conferences), but I don’t know much about it.

Also, some other names I can think of:

Syracuse University
Pace University
Ithaca College

Thanks alot, that made me feel a little more secure about my SAT score :). I will retake my SATs one more time and give it my best shot, this time well prepared because I’ve been studying all summer long and I will take SAT 2s as well so it can increase my chances, very thanksful for your honest opinion :)

@Herunar once again sorry about the bother, but I was also wondering about the fact that when I check college board on the majors of the Universities, International Relations is not listed, for example; Stony Brook does not have my intended major listed, can I get some help?

The only problem is that with Catholics Schools I am going to be paying for courses that do not interest me and I find unecessary towards my college career :).

My mistake. Stony Brook does not offer an international relations major, but you can major in political science and minor in international studies (essentially the same thing as an international relations major in other colleges).

In general, you can find the best information by checking colleges’ websites. Collegeboard is not very comprehensive and rarely updates.

Here’s the thing about your SAT score, while above average it is very low for the best colleges while your class rank would put you in the running for top colleges. Again, I would take a hard look at the optional list, at the top schools on that list even if you raised your score 200 points you would not get into their peers.

Schools don’t need to have an IR major for you to study IR. Many have programs, minors or the opportunity to construct a program putting together classes from different departments.

My suggestions:
Seton Hall
CUNY: City College and Staten Island
Bridgewater State
Lincoln University
Suffolk U
Maybe look into one of the Penn States

It’s the SAT that’s really holding you back, as noted by others here. Hope I was some help and good luck!

The fact that he has 3.63 GPA and was valedictorian makes me think that his school is probably not a very competitive school. Not all valedictorians get accepted into “top colleges” - the valedictorian of my class went to a #100-150 college.

Do take a look at the SAT Optional List, but don’t limit your choices based on that. It’s doesn’t make a big difference, unless you feel that your SAT scores are completely at odds with your actual talent and you have the ability to prove it to the admissions office.
