Help! Please look =] (have no clue about this transferring business)

soo i'm about to enter Northwestern in a couple weeks.. and yes, i shouldn't be entering college with the mind to transfer (so everyone says); however, i want to try.

my high school stats:
rank: salutatorian
SAT: M- 700, V- 800, W- 770
SAT II: Math IC- 710, Lit- 740, US History- 720
activities: editor in chief newspaper, cheerleading, model UN, vice pres student council, etc.
GPA: 4.2

i haven't applied for classes yet... and i don't know how to really go with my fresh year to be really good for transferring (aside from gettin a high GPA)..

what is it they look for in a transfer applicant? do you need tons of volunteer and extracurrics like high school? is a really high GPA the most important thing?

i hear you have to have a good "reason" to transfer such as your school not possessing strength in a certain academic program...

Northwestern actually has pretty good programs in the two things i have interest in (journalism and business >.>)

i am looking to apply for HARVARD and COLUMBIA. (i was waitlisted to those schools previously)

any tips, guidelines, help???

thanks so much in advance! please PM me or IM me if you have experience!!!

there's no problem with entering college with transferring in mind. If you've visited those colleges and are really familiar with them, you know what you want and why you want to go one of them.

Keep a high GPA up and be involved. I believe that you will have a strong chance of transferring in, but the biggest things to work on are you reasons for transferring, as I hear Harvard is particularly focused on great thinkers with a purpose rather than just really good stats.

Actually the only poster from CC that transferred to Harvard this year was from....NORTHWESTERN!
More pertinent- your stats are impressive and given that you will probably attain a high gpa, the only factor left to influence your admission decision is your essay. Good Luck!

ahh thank you =]

does anyone have any advice on what sort of classes i should take??? like should they revolve around a certain career goal (i guess)... and i'm still working on that reason for transferring other than 'ive always dreamed about goin there'.. i guess bottom line is.. the schools are amazing, and i just really want to attend O_O lol~

gen-eds, take gen-eds

whatre gen-eds?

basic classes, stuff like US history, calculus, broad english classes, physics, chemistry, etc. Take a wide variety of gen-eds from every department.

Make sure you check the websites for the schools you are interested in for what they desire in transfer courses. For instance, a friend's child couldn't transfer to UNC after fresh. year because she didn't get her 2nd eng. and her foreign lang done in fresh year and UNC liked to see those requirements finished.

yeah, certain schools have requirements like that, USC is another one. I don't think harvard or columbia have any pre-reqs like that but i could be wrong.

Focus, focus, focus, and get a really high gpa, to show you're not transferring because Northwestern is too tough for you, and to show you could fit right in at Harvard and Columbia.
