Help Please

I live in New York and I am a junior in high school. I've been looking at colleges and this one really grabbed my attention. There are some things i'd like to know though....

1) What is admissions looking for?
2) Is it important to have a lot of volunteer hours?
3) Is a 3.7 GPA good enough?
4) What is life on campus like?
5) How far is the closest beach?
6) Is it a diverse community?

Admissions looks for a good GPA (as in 3.0 or above at least), good SAT/ACT score (probably around 1800 I’m guessing, but I don’t think they’re picky).

They didn’t ask me about volunteering hours when I applied. That was for UCs.

3.7 is pretty good. I got in with a 3.8. I don’t see why you wouldn’t get in.

Life on campus…Can’t really say much because I commute. There are lots of restaurants here on campus and outside campus. There are lots of clubs to look at and lots of people to meet. CSULB is pretty too! Lots of plant life. And squirrels! We have a Japanese garden where you can feed the koi fish. It’s small, but very pretty.

Lots of walking though. The dorms are far away from most of the classes. If you’re engineering or music major, you mostly have classes at lower campus. Other classes are in upper campus. Scooters and skateboards are popular vehicles to get from class to class. Parking permit is a bit pricey here, about $100 a semester. Depending on the time of the day, parking can be a pain. Trying to park anywhere in Long Beach can be annoying because there isn’t much room to park. Everything is small and narrow.

Lower campus has the Rec Center where you can exercise. There’s treadmills, a track, an Olympic size pool, basketball courts, yoga, pretty much everything except football. We don’t have a football team. There’s even an archery club.
For parties, you’ll have to go look for the parties yourself. Sororities and frats usually have them.

The closest beach is about 5 miles away. You can take the bus there if you don’t have a car. The school has a bunch of bus stops where you can board for free. You always paid for it through tuition. All you need if your ID card to board free. But I’m warning you, CA beaches aren’t like Hawaii beaches. The water is freezing cold no matter what time of the year it is. Some of the beaches can be dirty, but I think the Long Beach one is ok.

Oh, we’re definitely diverse. This is California after all. We’re a melting pot. We have a bunch of clubs for different diversities. We have students of all races and religion. We have international students too, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the school had the whole globe.

I am planning on attending this fall, so I can’t answer all your questions but I’ll answer the ones I can.

  1. Admissions to any of the CSUs is based on the classes you took in high school, your gpa and SAT scores. There is certain classes that must be taken to be able to go to a CSU which are called the a-g requirements I believe.
  2. Volunteering does not count towards admission to CSULB.
  3. My unweighted gpa was a 3.7, and I was accepted. However it depends also your SAT score and if your major is impacted. Have you taken the SAT or ACT yet?
  4. I went to the beach after I visited and it was I think a few minute drive from the campus.
Here’s a link to the CSU site where you can find a lot of information on Long Beach as well as the other CSUs and also the certain classes required.
