I applied to Flagler University Early Decision agreement because I was under the impression that it was still optional to choose other schools. This was my fault, because I did not read the wording closely enough. However, my dream school is FSU, and now I am aiming to get out of the decision to go to Flagler, is this possible to do? I don't want to ruin my chances at getting in at FSU. I know it was my fault, I can't believe I did this. I'm just hoping to get out of it.

You need to call FLAGLER ASAP and withdraw your ED application. It is most important that you do this BEFORE they make an ED decision. Call them and ask to have your application changed to a regular admission application. You signed a binding agreement. But if you call ASAP before they make a decision and explain that you did not understand ED, and you thought it was like EA (non binding) they may release you from your obligation. CALL MONDAY.

If you do not try to get released now, then if you are accepted you are bound to attend unless your financial aid package does not meet all need.

JUST CALL and explain. It is early in the game and you may be able to get released.

Hey Sunny – she thought it was EA – but her acceptance came today. Is there a way for her to opt out, per se?

However, she was 17 when sent in the application?

She has to call, explain she was misinformed, and see what she can do. They might release her. Did it require a parent’s signature?

No - her mother didn’t sign it. That was the leniancy we were going to try and expose when she called.

I WOULD NOT TRY TO GET OUT ON A TECHNICALITY. I recommend calling and explaining that one did not understand the consequences of ED. I would hold out the “age 17 with no parental signature” until later. The OP needs to call and discuss the situation.

Thank you sunny, you’re always a huge help! I hope can come out alive haha

The EXACT same situtation happened to my D. She applied ED to Flagler last fall and was accepted. Then got the acceptance to FSU (which she never thought in a million years would happen) and changed her mind. We simply did not send in the deposit required by the due date and got a letter saying she was now on a waiting list since she did not respond. Maybe it wasn’t the right way to handle it, but that is what we did and the ultimate response. Hope this helps.

However, if you decide to call Flagler it will not be a big deal to switch. They have not yet sent out acceptances, so there is still time to switch to RD. The office people there can be a little snappy, but you are still within the time limit to do so.

Just relayed the information and we are all doing a victory dance! [We’re probably goign to steal your not pay idea, or ask if she can be switched. However, she got her acceptance letter Saturday, so there’s really no switching, maybe just ignoring] You just made my weekend alongwait - I hope your daughter is liking it up here.

As I recall, the deadline for deposit was Jan 1st? By then you will have an answer from FSU and some time to really decide which option is the best choice for you. I can only tell you what happened to us last year, but want to stress there are no guarantees it would be the same for you.

I just happened to be in St. Augustine this weekend and the college is reallly very impressive. We have done a few tours thru the campus and dorms and it is unique, no question. FSU and Flagler are just opposites in so many areas. It’s a personal choice, but in my opinion neither would be a poor one. Good Luck!
