HELP!
I applied to several schools still waiting on a few decesions-but was accepted to cal state los angeles-san fransisco state-and university at buffalo- my major is biology (pre med).
Who should I choose?
Net price at each?
Buffalo, if it’s affordable. As in, you are instate for it.
buffalo is slighlty more expensive for me but not enough to make a diff in cost. so What I am concerned about is that I am a biology major and I intend to apply to medical school p. I have read alot of very negative remarks regarding cal state- schools -specifically cal state la and san fran. Buffalo is also a state school but I have not come across anything negative .That is my concern . Again cost is not a factor . which is more highly regarded-potentially in the eyes of a prospective med school. Thank You for the responses I appreicate it .
Both Cal states are commuter schools and I would not pay OOS fees to attend either. You have to factor in transportation/airfare costs if you are coming from NY. California has more “Pre-Med” students than the state can handle so there is no advantage in attending a CA school.
Stay in-state, excel at Buffalo and you should be fine as long as you have a backup plan as a Biology major.
Thanks for the response. I realized I was not very clear in my post. I am a CA resident/ca native born and rasied went to school in ca k-12 etc. So in terms of cost CA offers me slightly better pricing since its in state for me. I am currently living in NYC but not a NYC Res…So buffalo would be out of state costs for the first year and then I could apply for the ny res etc for tuition purposes. Going back to ca is my instinct However getting on a plane right now during the pandemic is very unappealing to me …additionally not super stoked about the rep of cal state LA
Thank you for the clarification. Cal states are great schools but some do not have the academic reputation that would enhance your chances at Medical school and being commuter schools for the most part will not give you that Residential college experience especially if you have to come cross country to attend.
good point. and yes Buffalo is the better choice for the various factors involved. Thank you for your imput and thanks to everyone that responded to my post.
I am not sure you will qualify for resident instate tuition by coming to NY and living there for a year. I know for a fact that CA prohibits that. I would call the FA office at Buffalo and ask before you commit.
thx for the tip. yes def will do .
Do your parents live in nys or will you graduate from a nys school?
If not, then you wouldn’t be a nys resident.
As an aside, you’d be better majoring in something else than biology, even for med school (biochem, chemistry, physics, Statistics… if you’re into STEM.)
