Help! Question about NMS competition...

I was registered to take the SAT October 9th, and subject tests November 6th. Somehow I missed the fact that October 8th is the night of my homecoming football game and dance!!! Not sure how that happened...

Anyway I would prefer to still take my subject tests in November so I can apply Early Action to a few schools, but would it be dumb to wait to take the SAT until Dec 4th if I am a NMSF? It says that Dec 4th is allowed but "We urge you to take the SAT no later than November 7 and not wait until December." Will taking it in December hurt my chances at Finalist standing?

Should I email NMS and ask them? Would it be worth it to take it in November and not apply EA to 1-3 schools? Or should I take it in October anyway, and see how I do (worried about score choice later)? What score range is NMS looking for?

Sorry, that's a lot of questions!!! Thanks in advance for your help!

P.S. I took the ACT for my actual test.

bump. please help!

oh crap. i just did the same thing as you…
our homecoming game and dance is on the 8th and i have two damn subject tests on the 9th.

ugh

You people didn’t take the PSAT/NMSQT so now you have to take an SAT to make up for it?

^No, you have to verify your PSAT score.

I’m thinking you already took your SAT at least once. As long as your SAT score is within 200 points of your PSAT score, you’ll be fine.

Nope, I’ve never taken the SAT. Any advice?

Take the SAT in October, so if you need to take it again you will give yourself that opportunity in November or December. Your SAT score needs to be very close to your PSAT score or better if you have a PSAT score right at the semi-finalist cutoff score for your state.

How do you know how the PSAT compares to SAT? My d’s PSAT at cutoff but SAT scores
M 700, W 730, E 760.

Add a zero to the end of the PSAT scores for comparison.

^So, boymom5, since your d’s SAT score is 2190, it would be a match for a PSAT score of around 219.

But someone said that the SAT score has to be “very close” to the PSAT score. I don’t think that’s quite right. The SAT score just has to “confirm” the PSAT score by being kind of similarly high. Scores around 2100 could probably confirm a PSAT of 230, I’m just guessing. And so on. I don’t know that the two scores have to be “very close.”

My thought on your dilemma is this, morgan27, (but then again, I’m a parent!) …

With all the money that is on the table as an NMF, and with the import of college acceptances and the costs of attendance today, it seems to me that the October SAT would appropriately be your priority.

It really is too bad about the Homecoming game and dance. But I’d be suggesting to my kiddo that he keep his SAT date, go to the game and dance if he wishes, but play it kind of low-key that Friday night. Make an early night of it. Shortchange the game and dance experience, but still have fun with your friends. Go to bed at a reasonable hour. And feel proud of yourself for making a responsible choice.

You CAN do both. You just have to sacrifice a little of the fun on the Friday before the SAT.

If you decide that EA is not that important to you, change your SAT test to November. (It will cost you to change dates.) But for my kids, EA has been very important, for several reasons. For one, EA candidates often have more access to more scholarships (some schools offer certain scholarships to EA candidates ONLY; there’s less money in the pot at some schools for later applicants; etc.).
