So I have taken about 15 practice tests, and I have the BB, Princeton Reviews 11 tests, Kaplan Critical Reading, Grubers Complete SAT, and Barrons SAT, as well as Princeton review Vocab Flash Cards. Also, I have both editions of the Direct Hits. BUT, I am having serious trouble with critical reading and writing.

On the Dec 2011 SAT I got,
680 reading (missed 2 SC, 8 passage)
800 math
750 writing (9/12) (missed 2 mC)

can anyone give tips for me to raise to 800 in all sections???

Have you taken all the tests in your books? If not, I would suggest you do that. If you have, I would spend time reviewing your sections to improve your score. Remember though, nothing guarantees 2400. This only is for improvement, not for a perfect score.

You seem to have writing MC down pretty well. What I found was that missing one or two MC is okay, so long as you get a good essay score.

CR is a bit tougher. Keep working on vocab and make lists of hard words that you come across. Here’s a few pointers from an SAT guide that I’ve been working on.

• Mark the passages. Underline sentences that reveal author intent, style, or attitude towards the subject.
• Circle words that may be asked about. In particulars, words that may have multiple meanings.
• Write brief notes and words that summarize the main idea of paragraphs. Be sure not to make them too elaborate; one or two words are fine.
• Pretend to be interested. Even if the passage is about how bacteria eat, pretend to be interested because it will make you more focused on the passage.
• For the questions, have an answer in your mind before looking at the choices; then, choose the one the most closely matches your guess.
• Read carefully. One or two words can make a big difference. This is especially true when you have dual passage questions, and it asks for what the author of one passage thinks.
• Stay focused. Losing focus will often make your pace slow, causing you to have to rush the last several questions. Thus, it is important to keep up a steady tempo.
• Circle questions you skip so that you know to go back to them. Skip questions when it’s taking too long to answer.
• Go back to the passage, especially if line numbers are given. After all, the answers are in the passage. All you have to do is find them.

I thought that anything above 2250 is just luck.

And well 2230 is nearly 2250, so I guess luck? I don’t know. But that’s an amazing score, I doubt harvard won’t accept you if everything else was just as impressive

Gosh dude you are obsessive. Just try to raise it only 20 points in CR.
Not getting 2230 is 99th percentile… I’d go with 2260 or even 2250… Why do you want a perfect with all sections btw? You aren’t going to get brownie points by college.

OMGGGGG im in the same exact or nearly same exact situation. i took the oct sat and i got a 2210 690 math 800 writing (80/10) and 720 reading. and i’m taking the sat again (my parents want this to be my last time) in january - at the end of THIS month!!! but my score isn’t going anywhere and i think i might even be getting worse at writing i’m so stressed and idk what to do. i’ve done well in math before but i ALWAYS tend to make these dumbbbbbb mistakes that lower my score by so much. so i really want to consistently do well in writing and math but READING is a huge concern for me - i don’t know how to do well in the passage based sections! I NEED HELP GUYS. thanks i want to get atleast a solid 2300 on the january sat - i have like 26 days left!

It’s going to be very difficult to get a perfect score on the reading when you are getting 8 passage question wrong. When doing the passages, it is best to be careful and thorough, but do not over-analyze the questions.

ooh I raised my score from 2200 to 2400.
if you took 15 practice tests…honestly that’s more than enough. I only took 7 in the month between.

but make sure you remember what mistakes you made, if you don’t, doing the tests is absolutely worthless! I suggest making an excel file with every question you got wrong and the reason why, and calculate a mean of the difficulty (careless mistakes or difficult questions). make you you constantly review this list, so that you can spot one of your own mistakes without blinking an eye.

Thank you so much for the advice!! What did you do to raise it like that??? I really need the info to help me. Math is no problem, and writing I can touch up to get that 800…but just out of curiosity, jellyksong, what books, materials, or classes did you use to prepare for this?

For CR passage based questions, always remember that the answer will be supported by the text. I think people get tripped up because there seem to be several logical answers/conclusions but the correct one will always be supported by the text. If it helps, after you pick out your answer choice go back to the text and underline the part with the support to your answer (so if it’s not supported it’s not the correct answer). If you get all the passage questions right, even if you miss 1-2 SC you should get a 800.

Oh, and the questions you answer wrong in the Blue Book, make sure you go to the CB website and look at their answer explanations. You want to make sure you understand the CB testmakers’ reasoning.

There is not a person on this planet that can say I’m going to get a 2400. 1 math problem omitted and that is all over. Just review more and take a lot of practice tests. I find that practice test with official timing helped me more than anything.
