Hi CCers, I am a 17er and I have recently published a book in China. What should I do if I want to include this in my application to colleges? Do I list it in Commapp or elaborate it in my essay? and can I just mail them my bool along my app?
Another thing is that I have the ISBN code for my book but how do AOs verify it? If they search it on Google, the only thing they get to see is probably whether the code is numerically correct, but no info about author or so. btw my book is not on amazon.com or other websites.
Thank you so much for your opinions!:)

Bump:) bump:)

HELP!HELP!HELP!
Any opinions??

“If they search it on Google, the only thing they get to see is probably whether the code is numerically correct, but no info about author or so.”

Have you run the search yourself? What turns up in Google?

In any case, you wouldn’t report the ISBN, you would report the title of the book, publisher, and date of publication. If is isn’t for sale on Amazon or elsewhere, why not? Can you publish it in E-book format? That way you could just provide a link or PDF instead of sending a physical object with your application.

First, you should make the dinstinction on the application of whether it is a self-published, vanity-press published, or legitimate publication company published. You can include it under your ECs and provide the ISBN and title, which, along with your name, they should be able to look up on the internet. With all three pieces of information, they should be able to find it. If it is not searchable on the internet, perhaps write your common app EC essay about writing it so that you can still tell them about it.

Nowadays, what counts is the quality of the book- not whether it has an ISBN or is for sale on the web. Is this a high level work that required considerable effort? If so, you can include a legitimate review (brief and from a knowledgable source, not just a reader’s review) in Addl Info.

@lookingforward Providing the type of publication used can lend itself to what you suggested. Though adding a legitimate review from a trusted source is a great idea.

The more blunt point to be made here: Just because a book is “published” does not mean it’s of any quality given the self-publishing options available now.

If you bring up the fact that you published a book in your application, it’s likely schools will want to find out about it and ask the kinds of questions others have posted here: is this a publication through a legitimate publisher? did it require a great deal of work/originality? Is it any good?

If you cannot provide either the book itself, or materials that will help schools to answer these questions, it could be best to leave it off your application. Otherwise it may look like you’ve either paid to have the book published - or even that it it doesn’t exist. And you don’t want any college doubting your integrity.

Question: WHY was the book published in China? To a lot of people, whenever an award is given in China or an internship is finished in China, it instantly looses credibility.

Unless your book won some awards (major minor doesn’t really matter), then I guess it fits better under the EC section.

Then again, I am biased (with the Chinese thing).

Hi everyone! Many thanks to your advises~
@born2dance94 yes. my book is published by a legitimate publication company. and I will definitely write about it in my essay since it took me years to complete. And it is original.
@lookingforward I don’t know how I can get a credible review. do I ask professionals in the specific field of my book?
@YuhikoJay hi, i get your point. but I had no choice cos I live in China and I don’t have much access to foreign publishers. My work is in English for sure. and the publisher is pretty much well established.
thx again folks!

Talk with your publisher and find out who would own the rights to an e-book version. It would require a separate ISBN, but is shouldn’t be hard for you to create an e-book with a tool like [Mobipocket.com - eBooks and ebook reader for your PC, PDA and Smartphone: Palm, Windows mobile, Symbian, Blackberry, or PocketPC.](http://www.mobipocket.com/en/HomePage/default.asp?Language=EN) and you could then sell a Kindle edition through Amazon. For ideas about setting this sort of thing up, and then marketing your book, you could check out the information at Scribd

Good Luck!

thks for the info.
in fact, I don’t really want to sell my book. I publish it for the sake of acknowledging my work throughout these years. and I have no time to take care of the marketing. I better go and concentrate on my academics haha. the only thing that matters is whether AO can verify my work.
