Help Save Cal Grants

Dear Grant Recipient,

Is this old news? This is the first I've heard of this.

“Great News! The Governor signed the state budget and has left the Cal Grant Program intact and fully funded. As a result, all students who were notified that offers were “tentative” can now be assured that their grants will be awarded for the 2009-10 academic year.”

=D
That is really great to hear!

Do you know if the CAL program will be extended to 2010-2011 as well?

stupid question, but exactly how do transfer students get cal grants? right now im getting nothing …

^^ I am not sure…

^ By filling out FAFSA. It will let you know if you qualify.

that’s the link that provides eligibility requirements. as CBBolts mentioned, all you have to do is fill out FAFSA. Maybe you are not getting any aid because your EFC is too high?

well im in sort of a predicament. My parents make over 100k together and that automatically disqualifies me for FAFSA, but i pay for classes and what not and they arent helping much. They have me on their taxes and get a tax break and im basically on my own. Does anyone know how I could claim myself as independent?

No you can’t claim yourself as independent. To be independent you must be able to answer yes to one of the dependency questions on FAFSA. (age 24 or older, married, have a dependent of your own you provide support of 50%+, be a veteran etc etc). If you cannot answer yes to one of the questions you are a dependent. Your parents claiming you or not claiming you on their taxes is irrelevant as far as financial aid is concerned. We have not claimed our son on our taxes for years as he was out of college for 2 1/2 years and totally self sufficient and independent. When he returned to college at 22 he was still considered our dependent for financial aid purposes.

Your parents income is too high for the calgrant.

thank you for the quick response! so i am still dependent, even if i have my own residence (apartment)? ehh i guess im out of luck then. It sucks, i know people who get cal grants cause they look needy on paper but really have their money in other places (stocks, other countries, parents etc) and they spend the money they get on whatever they desire… oh well, i got my answer so back to the grind i go.

my financial aid office takes so long to process everything. i need my money.
