I'm entering UofR this fall, btw. What I intend to do is major in Biochemistry, and then... well, I haven't really decided. I know I want to do something with English Lit and Mathematics, but I haven't decided between a second major, two minors, etc.

AP Scores:
Bio, Chem, Calc BC, Stats, English Lit, English Lang, and Spanish : (5)
US : (4)

So here are my options:
FALL 2011
1). Bio 110 vs. Bio 112
2). Chm 131 vs. Chm 171Q
3). Mth 171Q, no calc
I'm thinking of forfeting my calc credit and taking 161Q.
4). Writing 105 - Tragedy in the Graphic Novel

SPRING
1). Bio 111 vs. Bio 113
2). Chm 131 vs. Chm 172Q
3). Subsequent Math
4). IDK... Maybe my first English Lit class.

Help. Thanks.

1) BIO 112 strongly recommends that students have completed AP Bio with a 4 or 5 in order to take the class. Material is very fast-paced and wide-ranging. Lots of outside of class reading expected. Competition in the course is stiff due to the quality of the students (and the presence of many pre meds) in the class. New instructor this year who new to the school, so it’s impossible to predict what the grading will be like or what exact material will be covered. BTW, it’s a BIG lecture class–typically around 250+ students in the class.

2) CHM 171Q is OChem for freshmen. I strongly recommend you take 131 instead. One AP chem class simply doesn’t give you an adequate knowledge base to skip Gen Chem. Also the Bio dept will not allow its students to use AP credit to place out of required classes. (And Chem 131-32 is a requirement for majors.)

3) MTH 170Q series is one of those things you either like or you flunk. It’s not like any calc class you’ve ever had. Proof-based. You’ll be producing proofs instead of doing problem sets. D2 said i the 170 classes were ‘crazy-hard’ in her opinion, but she didn’t take the Q series. (So take her opinion with a grain of salt…) She started with MTH 235.

RE: what calc to take— if you have doubts about which calc series to take, enroll in 171Q because can always switch into a 161-162 class during the drop-add period. The 170 series classes are very difficult to change into later because of how the course is structured. You miss too much material if you start the class 2-3 weeks into the semester.

It’s also certainly possible to enroll in both MTH 171 and MTH 161 (or 162), attend both for a week or two to see which you like, then drop one.

D2 is a bio (neuroscience) and math double major at UR. She says that the math dept offers particularly good advising to its students and is very invested in their success.

1). Bio 110 vs.** Bio 112**
2). Chm 131 vs. Chm 171Q
3). Mth 171Q, no calc
I’m thinking of forfeting my calc credit and taking 161Q.
4). Writing 105 - Tragedy in the Graphic Novel

SPRING
1). Bio 111 vs.** Bio 113**
2).** Chm 131** vs. Chm 172Q
3). Subsequent Math
4). IDK… Maybe my first English Lit class.

Take bio 112 if you can- anything to avoid Olek.
Take 131- it is a difficult class, and I knew many people who had taken AP chem and were in that class and didn’t do that well. CHM 171 is incredibly difficult, and one AP class isn’t good enough.
For math, just don’t take the 170s. It is extremely different than anything you will have ever done, and extremely difficult. Unless you are planning on being a math major, its simply not worth the extra 10 hours a week to try and figure out what the text book is even saying.
Take calc 162 if really want to take a math, or no calc at all.

Inevitably, my plans will change, but this is what I’m thinking (or have decided on):
MAJOR - Biochem
Minors (2) - Math & English Lit

Fall 2011
1). BIO 112 - rave reviews so far
2). CHM 131 - 171Q seems too daunting
3). MTH 165 Linear Algebra w/ Differential Equations
Credit for 161/162, as I’ve decided on solely a Math Minor, and thus, I won’t have to take 164, MultiCalc (not a prerequisite).
4). WRT 105 Tragedy in the Graphic Novel

Spring 2012
1). BIO 113
2). CHM 132
3). MTH 150 Discrete Mathematics
4). ENG 115 American Lit

Summer 2012
1). ENG 210 Shakespare, but a transfer credit from another university
