Their website says that if you indicate an interest in a science or math major within the college of arts and sciences, that you should submit a math satII and a science satII. I have taken the math 2 test, but I have not taken any science test. I have other non-science related subject tests, but will I be penalized for not sending a science one? should I indicate a different interest?

does anyone have any input?? I need help on this ASAP

You could put on additional details that you had not previously known about the required test and to maybe ask for an extension? Sorry, wish I knew more to help.

Seniorsenior - not to be critical but it sounds like you could have mapped this out much better and in advance.

My brother is a Jumbo, i.e. Tufts alum, from the 70’s - always a reputation for rigor. No excuses there, he did well went to med school became a doc. etc . . . Tufts is known as “the school of hard knocks.”

However, why not just go with “undecided” like a large minority of freshman applicants do?

Then you can submit your best SAT II scores. It may help your chances of getting in. If you’re hell-bent on submitting the science, you can sign up for SAT II late registration (regular deadline was yesterday 12/30) and send Tufts the scores. Date of Testing is 1/28/2012 and science is offered.

You won’t be able to wait to check out the results. So it could be a dice roll unless you are very confident. This depends on what your preparedness is, or could be ramped up between now and then. You will just need to indicate that Tufts get copies of the scores.

If you have a couple of outstanding SAT IIs, go undecided and submit those scores.

Good luck and Happy New Year!

Mr. VC

I think you should take January subject tests and indicate that you would like them sent directly to Tufts. I think this would probably be acceptable as most schools will accept January SATs as long as the student indicates they would like the scores to be sent directly to the school.

Just take a January test. Tufts definitely accepts them. Case closed.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I just have one clarification question that I probably should have started with. Is environmental studies considered a science that they would want an sat II for? I already indicated an interest in the “future plans” section of the common app in environmental studies… would it look strange to now say undecided on the Tufts supplement?

Then you should take Biology E or Chemistry, not Physics. Not everyone has SATII scores in their major, especially since a lot of majors don’t have SATII tests! As long as you have a science you’ll be set. Just prioritize the ones that are most relevant.

FYI: Tufts will consider your 2 highest SAT Subject Test scores, so i don’t think it matters much which science you take (except for engineers, which doesn’t apply here).

As usual, I’m one step behind WCASParent.

I’ll add, for a certainly degree of finality, that I would NOT suggest going undecided. You have a notion of what you want, and I’d let us see that. You could, as has been suggested, take a Jan SAT, but I’m not sure that’s necessary. Environmental studies at Tufts is a program that can be highly science oriented, or it can be molded towards humanities and social sciences. Even if you go the science route, there are certain expectations we have that you’ll be versed in policy and sociology that we would not have of a straight physics or chem major.

I think the Math SAT subject test covers you. Double check that a science SAT wouldn’t help you at other schools you are considering, but I don’t think you need one for us so badly it’s worth sitting again in Jan.
