Hi guys. I am a greenhorn to the College Confidential forums and this is my first post. I would be requesting two things. Firstly, those of you have have the time and inclination, could you please take a look at an essay I wrote and score it as per the SAT rubric?
Secondly, if someone is going to be appearing for the SATs this year, especially in January, could they please let me know if they are interested in sharing essays that they write with me. So I can grade them and vice versa. My SAT score is currently around 2250+ assuming that my essays can manage a 9 or a 10. PM me if interested or let me know in the comments below.
That being said here is the prompt:
Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.
Given the importance of human creativity, one would think it should have a high priority among our concerns. But if we look at the reality, we see a different picture. Basic scientific research is minimized in favor of immediate practical applications. The arts are increasingly seen as dispensable luxuries. Yet as competition heats up around the globe, exactly the opposite strategy is needed.
The Essay:
Creativity has a crucial role in today’s world. It is the crux of problem solving and innovation. This is due to the dynamic nature of issues that creativity has enable man to tackle. Several examples from history along with current affairs, aptly illustrate this fact.
Firstly, consider the advent of the personal computer. The modern day Graphics User Interface (GUI) was a ground breaking advancement in user interface design. Previously, in the twentieth century, computers were controlled by a complicated command line interface (CLI) which had hindered their main stream adoption. It wasn’t until 1984, when the late Steve Jobs introduced the Macintosh, did this change. Jobs was able to resolve the problem of typing lengthy, confusing instructions by making computer commands correspond with interactive visual elements on the screen. Undoubtedly, this made computer usage far more intuitive. This exemplifies how creativity plays an instrumental role in resolving problems.
Fast forward to today’s world where an estimated billion people are deprived of internet access. Consequently, they are deprived of the benefits the Internet offers as a medium of information. From imparting education to enabling truly global communication, the Internet is indeed a valuable resource. Notable problems facing greater Internet access include unfavorable geographic conditions along with the lack of infrastructure in underdeveloped regions like the majority of Africa. Companies like Google have conceived an ingenious solution to the problem by providing wireless internet access via hot air balloons. This venture, known as Project Loon, demonstrates how creativity helps ensure that humanity is able to deal with the pertinent problems it faces.
It is easy to identify a diverse range of problems in our world. From climate change and global warming to dwindling natural resources and overpopulation. Given the diversity in the issues facing mankind, it is only logical that the solutions would have to be of an equally varied nature.
In fact, some of the problems like ozone depletion have only recently come to light. Our forefathers were not plagued with concerns of ozone depletion, we are. As a result it only stands to reason that antiquated, stagnant solutions will not resolve our issues. Humanity needs an original dynamic approach to solving its problems. Being multifaceted in its application, creativity meets that requirement perfectly. In conclusion, it is clear that creativity, being the source of the solutions to our problems, is an essential requisite for humanity’s continued progress.
Thank you and I will greatly appreciate any and all constructive feedback!
